How many frames...

Post by Jerrit Tenurb » Thu Apr 24, 2003 7:05 pm

...does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
No, in most anime, (lets say the average) how many frames would equal one syllable?
I'm a webcomic man born and a webcomic man bred, and when I die I'll be a webcomic man dead.

Do you mean how many frames it would take to make a character's mouth look like the character is saying specific words or letters?

*say letters and words silently and slowly to yourself and take note of every new shape your mouth forms...that would be a lot of frames*

Yes. That was what I meant. I suppose it would be a lot of frames.

For each syllable, you can expect anything in the range of 3 to 7 frames: the lower end being closed -> half-open -> open, and the higher end including tweening between those three keyframes.

That's been my experience, having worked with high-budget anime for film or some other special project (e.g. Metropolis, Wings of Honneamise, anything on the Animatrix DVD) and your typical TV series (Evangelion, Kanon).

I spent about ten hours making a character speak something in an AMV last week. From that, to open and close his mouth ONCE takes approximately three to five frames (four on average) per animated syllable.
