I know we had this discussion befor, dwchang, but allow me the chance to throw in another angle on the original intention of the creator. Don't most animes start off as mangas? Keeping in mind that the mangas are the creators true intentions, why does most animes stray from what is put in the mangas? After reading a few mangas myself and watching(or some times listening to) interveiws with creators, producers and directors, I realised that some times to original part is slowly disappering in the trasfomation to animation.

EX. 1) Real Bout High - their was one part that was a major difference in it. :: Spolliers :: In the anime Nagumo created the K-fights, but in the manga It was Shizuma. Plus in the anime Shizuma is a tough street punk that is a good fighter. In the manga is a complete badass, an equivalent to what Nagumo was in the anime. Shizuma has a mono brow in the manga, which was an key part to his charactor. Also removed from the anime.

EX. 2) Berserk - Their is a missing charactor named Puck. A little farry that was " a key member to the hawks" was removed from the anime completely. It was a move that they knew would take some of the fantasy out of the story, but with the creators agreement he was removed. The creator can agree to a lot of things but it does not mean it keeps true to his story. Somethings are an exceptable losses and that loss gained the creator a series, a paycheck and hopefully fans that well buy his manga. WoW it's like someone is paying to advertising your book.

I am starting to see more tant and cruption I the cross over from magna to anime then in the dubbing and subbing.

How can any say what the creators intend. I don't carry what if you whatched EVA subbed or dubbed. No one every told me what was the meaning behinded it, only what it ment to them or what they think it might mean. You can take two people who seen it subbed or dubbed and get two different ideas and you can find a fan of the sub and a fan of the dubbed an get the same story.

Does everything have a meaning!!!! NO certainly not. What the hell is the deeper inner meaning in Magical Baton girl comet san???? I will flat out say that the hellsing and slayers dubs are better than the subs. You can tell quality work when you see it and just like dub studios can do a bad job so to can the originals. Also I don't see what vision you have to have to turn something from a manga to an anime! Most people will agree that mangas are better than the animes they spawn. Love Hina and Ranma are two examples.

One name that a lot of people have trouble with is Ryu.

My friend who does a lot of subtitle work for differing anime companies got on my case until I pronounced it right.

(For those who are interested, you say Ryu by saying the word "you" with a quick 'd' sound before it.... d'YOU)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Akira one of the first anime's to be properly released in the US as a dub. Thus, I could "blame" Akira for starting the popularisation of anime and manga in the west. That's the important thing; it was a dub. I mean, I've seen it, and I love it, but the story is weird and confusing, and from what I hear, the original dub wasn't great.
If its all so bad, what started the anime "craze"? Why would producers, and translators waste their money on something they see as a flop?
If all dubs are so crappy, why does this forum exist? People are drawn here by a love for anime/AMV's.
I know not everyone here is western, but those who are, and can't speak a word of Japanese; how the hell can you tell whether or not the voice acting is better? Yes, they are famous, yes, they are treated like celebrities, and paid lots, but c'mon, what about all those Hollywood "stars" who can't act for pennies, but they have a nice bum so it makes it all ok?
With the advent of DVD's it is no problem; you can buy the English dub, and if you don't enjoy it, in most cases there is the option of the original voices, with subtitles.
As for what the creator intended; who counts as a creator? The artist with the original conception? The story-writer? The animators. Very rarely is their creation altered (except in the cases of things such as Nelvana, and CCS. Grr).
An example; I have seen both the translated version of Evangelion, and a subbed version; not that much has changed; the story is the same.
I mean, its like complaining that one version of Hamlet is worse than another because it was directed differently.
I honestly feel that anime is an artform, and as such open to interpretation.

Good point to which I agree...to well...a degree. This is of course true for some shows like the ones you mentioned, but at the same time a number of shows have the creators onboard during the entire process. I'd assume b/c they like their work and don't want it butchered.

However, there are good animes that are accurate to the manga that preceded them. A great example of the anime being accurate to the manga is Rurouni Kenshin. I know for a fact the creator was involved in that process and (excluding the fillers Sony made to kill time), the show is very accurate to the manga.

As for Eva, if I'm not mistaken, the anime came first. Also regardless, it's quite obvious the creator was involved since the director was Hideaki Anno. Another good example of this is (surprise surprise) Escaflowne...Shoji Kawamori came up with the idea...boom show...and then the manga came out. Basically what I'm getting at is that the manga-> anime analogy doesn't always work since A) some anime comes out before the manga and B) some anime just comes out without manga.

At the same time, even though I agree that in some animes the true creators intentions/vision ARE in fact changed...when you dub it you've essentially gone through two iterations of change and thus something even further away from the "vision." Make sense?

I'm lucky that most of the shows I like either had the creators involved or are really accurate :) :) :)

lol .. any thing by adv? ... man ... have you heard the Eva dubs ... IMO those are god awful ... but your free to like what ever you want ...
good point...

Eva is old as fuck, gay and loser movie, and it was their EARLY dub...

Ok, their NEWER dubs... any of their NEWER dubs are good... [recycled voice actors are fine by me as long as the DIRECTOR is good] It's NOT an actor's fault but almost ALWAYS a Voice director. (case and point, Wendee Lee is fantastic in the right direction, as mentioned, Cowboy Bebop. Then you can listen to her in Ai Yori Aoshi... [cringe] )

None that I know of. THe only "dub" that had anything to do with the Japanese crew is...Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, but people always mistakenly call this a dub when in fact it was first done in English and thus it is it's originally intended language. I might also note that it's a pretty high quality US voice acting. Perhaps there is a correlation to Japanese Voice Directors vs. US. I know it sounds like favortism, but the Japanese voice art or whatever you wanna call it just has a lot more talent in it...which is entirely based on the fact that they get paid more and are treated as celebrities...

As for you earlier statements...re-read my reply. I did note that I knew you were talking about reading the text and hence taking away to which I agree...to a degree. I can understand missing a few things on the screen due to reading, but at the same time..you get used to it and it's all good.

As for creator's not knowing best about their shows, I disagree quite a bit with that. Now I don't disagree that creator's can't be unhappy with their own work, but at the same time, that's what they created. I guess you can just call me a purist...I just like seeing things as they were originally intended..whether it be in japanese, french, germa and yes..english.

A related sidenote that I've never brought up: The United States is one of the only countries that dubs all overseas materials. Not to say there aren't dubs in other countries, but what I mean to say is...well...I was in Korea last summer and went to the movies. I saw a US movie and guess what...it was in English still and had Korean subtitles. This is the case in most countries.

Now their TV stations of course dub, but it's obvious that they treat other countrie's works differently. I won't go into why I think this is b/c well..I hate to say it, but it has to do with US arrogance/superiority and ignorance to other cultures.
Why must people only point at THIS movie. Tenchi Muyo In Love was originally slated for an ENGLISH recording first... [show me some solid proof otherwise and maybe I'll believe you... NOT]

There are those who say that the "original voices" are what they're going for. VHD:BL and Tenchi Muyo are two examples of NOT knowing what they're talking about...

Besides, Dubs will bring anime here. NOT subs...
