I wonder what tool is gonna necropost that other one now that i mentioned it.
Um, we started a threadf called "The World's Longest Thread" :? It had nearly 200 PAGES, now think about that, there's 15 posts a page.

Nothing on this site is even close, anything remotley near the top has been deleted.

I've seen longer when I used to hang around www.starkingdoms.com/forums more often. They have loooong pages sometimes and some serious heavyweight posters (4500+ posts). Good roleplaying thread.

I've actually seen a "proof" that makes it 5. It involves some strange mistake that most people can't figure out. Given most of the proof itself very few people would understand in the first place and hence why it gets away with it.

Presumably something like the following:

-A = B

-Hence A^2 = AB

-Hence A^2 - B^2 = AB - B^2

-Factorize: (A + B) (A - B) = B(A - B)

-Cancel: A + B = B

-As A = B, substitute: 2B = B

-Hence 2 = 1

Similar except this is REALLY lengthy and goes into more advanced mathematics.

BTW is the bolded line the incorrect one?

Wouldn't it be (-B)^2 != -B^2 since (-B)^2 = B^2 NOT -B^2?

Just curious...I bet I'm wrong.

you're wrong.

A = B so AxA = A^2. but since A = B it doesn't have to be AxA, it can be AxB or BxB, so A^2 DOES = AB

I'm sure it can be right some how, but I'm getting stumped on the factoring.

You are. That line just multiplies each side by B, and the next takes Bsquared from each side.

If you ever find that other proof, by the way, I'd love to see it.

Huh? Doesn't -A = B NOT A = B?

that post doesn't say negative A, it says A. It was stupid of him to use a dash on every step, but that's all it is. It doesn't represent a negative.

I found that problem in factoring I was wondering.

It doesn't factor to what's written down
Hence A^2 - B^2 = AB - B^2
^This = 0
(A + B) (A - B) = B(A - B)
^This doesn't = 0

When you're done factoring, it still has to equal the same thing.
