And practice a lot with some short clips. See what you can do and see what kind of unique things you can think up while tinkering with the program.

Experimentation is the best way to learn just about anything, especially if you don't have a 'guru' around who can teach you in person. Fiddle around with a couple of junk clips and go through and try out all the transitions to see what they do (if you've got the time). And don't think that you're limited to the transitions that are coded into the program. Especially if you throw After Effects and Photoshop into the mix, if you can think of it, you can do it (though it may take some time). The most powerful tool in video editing isn't one on the computer- it's your imagination.

Questions about transitions

Here is a site with some info on creating transitions and other effects within Adobe Premiere 6.0 and 6.5 (like there is really any difference)
It will give you some ideas and then you can take it from there. :wink:
