Nah, Americans aren't all that bad. Just mostly ignorant (in reference to anime). I dunno. Maybe it's it's just the majority of idiots, or that the annoying threads stand out more.
Anyway AX is evil (in a sense). If you're going to go over to a US con go to AWA. Or you could do what I'm doing and blow the money you would have spent on the airfare/accom, in the dealers room at AVCon or Manifest

At last years Manifest, Madman were doing $25 DVDs (~$22.40 Canadian), with a 10% discount if you bought a whole series (this was well before boxsets) and a T-shirt if you bought 2 DVDs or more.
Considering I bought BGC 2040 for $17 a DVD earlier this year, I'd expect them to drop their prices at dealers tables a fair bit.

I have come to the conclusion that people aren't really stupid, just too lazy to be bothered to think. Remember in highschool and the teacher would ask the class a question and everyone knew the answer, but noone would answer? They're just too lazy to be bothered to think about it and just wait for the answer that will be given to them anyways.

MAS... Melbourne Anime Society?
Yeah they're one of the organising clubs working on Manifest

It's just a combination of a numbers thing, and an attitude that has developed from reading far too many eva, fighting, sex with, etc... threads. But that's just my problem with the General Anime forum. And has little to do with anything else.
I'm not going to complain about the lack of anime, (right now I should be looking for a new job). Until I lost my old one, I was buying almost every new anime DVD released (no real lack of).
The only thing I'm kind of pissed off about is not getting the premiere of Chobits this year. Otherwise, I couldn't care less.
