This question gets asked at least once a day.

"If someone feels the need to 'express' himself or herself with a huge graphical 'singature' that has nothing to do with anything, that person should reevaluate his or her reasons for needing said form of expression, possibly with the help of a licensed mental health practitioner."

Grr, stupid newbies. I'd say Adobe Premiere 6. If you're using fansubs, don't. The subs are annoying. I suggest buying a DVD-ROM drive (Which you can get for about $40), and buy the anime on DVD. Then, rip the footage, if it's a multilanguage DVD (English and Japanese), rip either audio track. If it's a Hong Kong/Chinese bootleg, which only have English/Chinese subtitles with only Japanese audio, rip the episodes/movie in Japanese raw, with no subtitles. Here's a link to the ripping method I use, it's a bit of a pain in the ass if the wav audio is more than 2GB, but it's worth it. Footage in VCD MPEG-1.

If you or someone who know is a student then go to Adobe's site and check out educational prices.

Pirate it. Even though a-m-v.org is against piracy, I'm sure not everybody who makes AMVs paid $550 for Premiere 6.0.

You're right. Some of us use legally free software instead.

But, really, try to find a way to get the educational discount first. Piracy is just stupid -- there's a high risk of viral infection by trojan horses, and it gives a few organizations we all hate an excuse to keep trying to jack with our civil rights.

Even though getting the software at the educational rate if you're not a student isn't technically "correct" either, at least through that avenue of action you have some defense. :)

Some of us use cheaper stuff.
Those who think $500 is too much for video software would be well advised to study Discreet's lineup.
