Escaflowne: The Movie
As eveyone who's seen it knows, the escaflowne movie is a retelling of the series' plot under much darker circumstances. I would like to know whether you liked the series' version of the plot or the movie's version of the plot better and why.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I thought the Escaflone Movie was awful.
While it had a wonderful score and great animation, the plot of the movie was empty and the pacing was non-existant.
While I had issues with the TV show, I still think the TV show is the only Escaflowne you need.
The movie was just bad... and really rather dull... and not well thought out... and had the characters from the show pop up for 15 minutes to say "Hi...remember me? I was in the TV Show... ooops... my time is up..."
Nothing was really explained well and the final confrontation scene was downright embarassing.

Really? I didn't see much connection at all between the plot of the TV series and the plot of the movie.
I've seen both... and I feel they were two very different stories.
Did you see both?

For myself I am a huge Escaflowne fan. Watching the movie was really interesting at that. The Escaflowne itself being more biological and the genre had a dark feeling to it. The character animation was sort of flat and dark highlights. Coloring was good and the scenes was cool. Van really kicks butt here:) Millerna looks way better, Folken was harsh looking with his hidious huge hair style. Dilandau is crazy as ever, Jajika was well done but more vicious looking. But overall it was worth seeing. I saw this while it was in Japan and glad my friend sent it to me and I had help subtitling it.

I agree to an extent because if what you're refering to as "fluffy" is the love story I would have to disagree. In my opinion the whole underlying message, storyline, or what ever you wanna call it, about Escaflowne was the love story between Van and Hitomi. The gravity and power of love if you will. The fact that they ditched some of the fluffy stuff kind of disapointed me, but was nessary to a point to tell the story in the ammout of time aloted.fellowhoodlum wrote:Well I thought ditching most of the fluff from tv series was a good idea. Though the story is so compressed you don't really appreciate it in full unless you've watched the tv series. And ironically, after I did _that_ the movie just confused me.
The idea about that Escaflowne is a retelling of the story just doesnt fit. Rather the plot was changed somewhat in order to try and make a good movie that did justice to the TV series. Which i think they failed at.
The movie wasnt bad and it wasn't nessarily good either. I had liked the original plot and story line of the TV series and was hoping that the movie would have played off of that. Though I did like some of the new ideas and concepts that were put into the movie. The movie was definately confusing and you had to pay close attention to what was going on or you'd get lost pretty easily. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Yes I have seen them both. I just watched the series fully through for the second time. What I meant was, as opposed to being either a side story or sequal, as most anime movies based on series are, it was a retelling under different circumstances. For example, Escaflowne is now Atlantis, etc. etc. I thought the movie was good, and I think your expectations were too high. Did you think they'd be able to fit all aspects of the series 26 episode plot into 96 min? I thought they did a fine job with what they had, and especially enjoyed the action sequences. They got rid of all the stuff in the series that I disliked, such as intensified luck, Hitomi falling in love with Alan, and THANK GOD THEY KILLED AMANO! Anyways, I like the movie and the series about the same, I just like them both in different ways.UncleMilo wrote:SSJVegita0609 wrote:As eveyone who's seen it knows, the escaflowne movie is a retelling of the series' plot under much darker circumstances.

BTW, after watching the series twice a thought occured to me. Is Dorncurk (dunno how to spell it) supposed to be Isaac Newton? If you listen to the teacher talking in Hitomi's class he's talking about Newton's intrests in alchemy, and the man's name is Isaac. Plus in the flashbacks about his life on Earth he does look quite renisance-esque.

I never at all thought of that. Maybe because I haven`t had the time to watch it as closely. I would check it over now, but I don`t have the series. Next time I watch it, I`ll check. But I`ll say it`s a good deduction.SSJVegita0609 wrote:BTW, after watching the series twice a thought occured to me. Is Dorncurk (dunno how to spell it) supposed to be Isaac Newton?
