I can't believe I didn't bother to to read all of this...wait...yes I can. Anywho way I'm gonna give everyone my opinion on the situation...whatever the situation is.
First of all Yuppa sounds one of those people who always has to open his (her? what are you?) mouth to say things. This proves that s/he is not a ventriloquist as far as we can tell. Yuppa also swims in the shallow end of the pool for fear of drowning. Here is a list I made
1. I have drinking problem.
2. I do love some drinks a bit much (I really like beer)
3. I can't think of anything...uhm...I like beer.
4. I do not watch Hentai unless I am drunk or not wearing pants or both
5. I could cosplay but I won't
6. I love DDR, its fun to play without pants
7. I'm 28 and male
8. I am somtimes said to be dashing and charming, but only when the girl is already drunk and I'm buying.
9. I wear a size 11 on my foot
10. I weight about 164 pounds
11. I'm a social drunk and to tell the truth, I started to be more social when I started drinking more often.
12. I like to learn about the Japanese women
13. I like Japanese beer
14. I do have some very close friends by the way, but they never want to sleep with me.
Most of the people I know are generally nice and not that bad looking, but I still hate them. So, yeah, whatever.

Holy hamburgers this thread was long. I had enough time to drink and entire pop and have to go AFK while reading this whole thing... why I read the whole thing I don't know.
I'm an otaku. But I don't live in my parents basement... I live in their upstairs! I'm 22, I'm male, I'm not fat, I don't know whether or not I'm ugly truthfully cause I don't really put too much thought into that. I don't have a girlfriend not because I have no social life but because I just plain can never get the guts to ask a girl out.
As for people liking anime girls because they can't get a rl girlfriend... I have a friend who has had several girlfriend and currently has one and he still likes anime girls so that's BS.
And on the thing about people getting mad when someone calls anime a "cartoon". Well if you wanna get technical not even all American cartoons are really "cartoons". I took a film class in community college see and I learned that cartoon was just ment to be the name for a specific type of animation. But now almost everyone calls all animation cartoons. Why? Well I guess it's like how alot of people call tissues kleenex now even though kleenex is just a brand name. Or it could be that people are just too lazy to say animation cause it's a longer word then cartoon.
Anyhow in short, I'm smart and Serpico isn't... j/k

So what exactly is the definition of 'otaku' for this thread? Is it anyone who's an anime fan, or only those who make anime a constant part of their life? Or is it only those who take anime to an unhealthy obsession?
I'm a fan of certain animes, there are some I wouldn't touch no matter how much the general anime-watching fans rant and rave about them. That makes me picky, but when it comes to my favorites, I do incorporate the animes into more than 75% of my life. I'm 23, have my own apartment, graduated with an english major (spawned, I might add by an early introduction to the wonders of fanfiction - thanks to anime). I nearly minored in art, after my introduction to fanart - again, thanks to anime. I've never cosplayed, but I'm fairly sure I could pull off some well-done dress-ups if I did. (In other words, I'm not fat, ugly, or old). I'm single, but it's by choice rather than lack of opportunities. I watch anime, but only in spurts - a single series repeated for a week and then none for a month. I have my real life aside from anime where I write grant proposals, but that keeps me on my computer (if I were in a basement instead of an apartment, that would qualify me as a 'nerd' I'm sure). I've been known to forgo sleep/work/food in order to obsess in anime-related hobbies, but I'm still alive so it can't be too unhealthy an obsession. My anime-fan friends are much more intelligent than the friends I had before I was introduced to anime, so that doesn't speak badly of anime fans. I would love to take Japanese courses, or make a trip to Japan, but I don't obsess over the culture. I'm known to enjoy spurting out the random japanese phrase I picked up from an anime, but I do the same for spanish after watching translated movies, so if I'm obsessed it's a bi-obsession. Hentai...well, I'll read a well-done doujinshi, but I usually avoid hard-core animated hentai. And I rarely fantasize about anime characters (certainly not the females).
I should have made a list, but I'm working on my...27th hour without sleep so I'm not feeling too organized at the moment. To sum up, I guess I'm another one of the multitude who disprove the generalization of 'otakus' or anime fans in general.
