Dead or Die... I'm hopng that' not a typo and there's more of it... actually no. Too much a good thing isn't all that good.

Which Read or Die are you talking about? I've only seen the OVA but have heard that the tv series is completely different with new characters. Personally I thought it was awesome. I like Ranma too but you can make some valid criticisms about it (including that it goes on forever and starts to cover the same territory again and again). R.O.D had some terrific animation too, not sure where you friend is getting the idea that it's "terrible", especially compared to tv shows like Ranma and Eva.

I haven't seen all of Tsukikage Ran but it seemed decent enough. Not something I'd go out of my way to buy but worth watching

I think the actual newest anime I've seen and liked is Chobits.

It's bullshit. In the year 2002, the following awesome shows came out:

Azumanga Daioh
Witch Hunter Robin
Kiddy Grade
Onegai Teacher
Abenobashi Mahou Shotengai
Chobits
Full Metal Panic
RahXephon
And those are just the ones I've seen, there are others that I've heard nothing but good things about (Naruto, Tokyo Underground, etc.).

I haven't seen any animes from this year yet but I plan to remedy this problem very soon.

The ones I've highlighted are ones I have seen, and they kick ass! Especially Naruto, that anime ROX!

I’m not so much comparing them as far as one is better then the other. I am comparing them that he liked Ranma, Mcross Plus (not Robotech or Macross 7) and Neon Genesis, yet he thinks R.O.D. and Tsukikage Ran are utter crap and that there isn’t any new anime worth watching. – I totally disagree. R.O.D. and Tsukikage look good to me and I was just wondering what every one else thought of R.O.D. and T.R.? That’s all nothing more.

I liked the Read Or Die OVAs. And I liked Tsukikage Ran a lot, too (Miao-chan rocks). It was much better than I thought it would be.

Still, a lot of new anime series seem to be high on the technical scale but low on the story scale. I can't think of any off-hand (perhaps a testament to their staying power?) right now, though :( . A lot of series just seem to have turned into introspective pieces with great animation in an attempt to be considered of substance (I think Evangelion started this trend), and plain fail, turning into something boring.

Recent series like Azumanga Daioh, Ebichu, or Niea Under 7, on the other hand, aren't high on the gorgeous scale, but have great stories, and are fun to watch.

Basically, I guess the issue is, there appears to be a creativity drought in Japan. Philosophical musing on the state of being appears to be the order of the day over amusing or moving stories for now.

Give it time, and I'm sure things will pick up.
I'm out...

Well Neia under 7 is a big pos. But how about Narue No sekai and Last exile these are kickass series.
