I have new information on the live-action movie!
"San Francisco 3"
That's it, you can count me out of the people who will watch that movie. It's going to be fucked up and wrong.
I also have rather old info on the last 2 episodes of Eva: Anno had originally wanted to do something like the movie, but time and money prevented him from doing so. But this story is no more or less reliable than the one about Anno wanting to end the series in a hastily slapped-together 45-minute acid trip that went nowhere and didn't explain any of the things that were supposed to be revealed by the series end. We won't know for sure unless we ask him ourselves.
In my opinion, if Evangelion is about how Shinji and/or the other characters grow and change, then 25&26 do not reflect the show very well, since no new growth happens in any of the characters. They just rehash all the stuff from Episodes 1-24. The movie, however, does show some changes in the characters (well, Rei and Shinji anyway. Asuka is the same depressed psycho she always was, and Misato got over her problems a long time ago.) But to be honest, neither ending can stand alone; you need to see both for each one to make as much sense as possible.
San Francisco 3... I hope to the gods that my source is making that up.

cool, thnxdwchang wrote:Yeah I've heard it's similar to Eva (in a good way). I have had the first DVD for a few months and hope to watch it soon . I wonder if Koop's video will make sense after watching it...although his concept is fairly simple that most should see it regardless...just curious.

I'd post it, but it does contain spoilers
yeah, i also feel that way, but i'm not saying that that's the only reason it's there, the line works without it having to be anno's feelings about having to redo the ending, so i like that it has a double meaningAtomicWeezleman wrote:wow dude........ that puts all our speculation out the window a few month back, we were nearly there but not quite at that answer....... but thinking about it, it is a bit obvious........but i dont think thats the complete answer thought, it s part of it. I still hold that the 'how disgusting' is to symbolise Anno disgust at having to make the film
Anno- You bastards, what the fuck was wrong with the ending in the first place?? <shakes fist angrily in the air>
me too...[slits throat]the Black Monarch wrote:I have new information on the live-action movie!

i think this is a pretty big change, Tokyo has for a long time been a spiritual center or spiritual point in the world, taking evangelion away from it will in my opinion make some people let's say...unhappy.
i guess it really doesn't have to be Tokyo, in all actuality, San Francisco does have a very similar look to Tokyo 3's streets, and for some reason i think san francisco has wider streets than toko and that would help the production of the movie...or not, whatever [/rant]
this will make casting easier, especially to find someone to play that one technician that always plays air-guitar, also a hot (and extremely skilled hopefully) actor to play Misato.
but besides that it's an american movie (although still about a japanese tv series), i don't see any reason not to use Tokyo, the cities are kinda similar i guess, but i don't see that as a reason to change setting unless the place ur filming isn't real (i.e. The Shire from LotR) [/possible 2nd rant]

Yeah no new growth other than Shinji figuring out his own self-worth and rejecting this false reality. Oh and the fact everyone was going through this (which they somewhat showed in Episode 25). I know how stupid and rehashing of things that was...the Black Monarch wrote:In my opinion, if Evangelion is about how Shinji and/or the other characters grow and change, then 25&26 do not reflect the show very well, since no new growth happens in any of the characters.
Oh and the actual events that brought this about or even what happens after...that's all meaningless...we know that Shinji finds his self-worth and that he rejected that reality...what more did we need? That was the point of the show...

Now I'm going to play the "That's your opinion, not fact" card that has been used against me so many times.dwchang wrote:Oh and the actual events that brought this about or even what happens after...that's all meaningless...we know that Shinji finds his self-worth and that he rejected that reality...what more did we need? I think the point of the show was "The Four," how they deal with their demons, the hell that they go through, and their relationships with each other and with the show's non-central characters. I saw Shinji's quest for self-worth as a theme that was touched on lightly and in only a few episodes until the end. During the first 24 episodes, the Misato/Kaji relationship got more attention than Shinji's self-esteem. And then during the last two episodes, more attention was given to the relativism and perspective and all that other crap that I don't believe than was given to Shinji's self-esteem.
This debate always makes me tired. We're going to interpret the show's themes in our own ways regardless of the outcome of this discusion, so let's just call it off right now and spare ourselves the effort.

yeah, ditto monarch, so to you i say (and u said it best) "That's your opinion, not fact"the Black Monarch wrote:Now I'm going to play the "That's your opinion, not fact" card that has been used against me so many times.dwchang wrote:Oh and the actual events that brought this about or even what happens after...that's all meaningless...we know that Shinji finds his self-worth and that he rejected that reality...what more did we need? u do bring up some valid pts, that shinji was not always the center of the show, there were a lot of other perspectives that were shown, but shinji's self esteem and indecisiveness was always dominant in the show, i know ur not gonna tell me that u don't remember misato's pep talks to shinji about him making up his own mind, so i definately think it was a lot more than "touched on lightly."
and yeah, i also agree that this discussion about eva is old, but people will forever be watching eva, new people will come into contact with it and they will always be bringing up questions, eva's contraversery will never end, so i guess the best way to go about it is not get ur tail feathers ruffled, just feed the need for answers

Black Monarch you talk about ending the discussion and yet you present even more of your points...isn't that a big hypocritical?
At the same time, I agree with Kaji and you (to a degree). The show DOES have other focus points and yes...those four characters are the main ones...however, it's pretty obvious that the voice of the creator and the meaning is portrayed through Shinji. If everyone else were so important, why do they only go through his self-searching in detail (episode 26)?
I know you might retort with, "well they said they didn't have time to talk about the others" and that they showed some of it in episode 25...however, if you were really trying to convey the point of ALL four characters, would you honestly just focus on one an entire episode...to the point where he's sitting in a chair by himself in the middle of a room and everyone talking to him?
Again, everyone else IS important, but the show is fundamentally about Shinji's triumph. Others do triumph as well and develop, but the only character that is essential to the entire show...and the entire show is built around is Shinji.
