Funny- I remember reading that, in the initial concept, Macross was supposed to be a bit of a parody of the popular space operas at the time, yet when it was all set and done - lo and behold - it became one of the most famous space operas around :)

Ironic, no?
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

moroni do u like pink floyd?
Irrelevant

Staring at the night sky above the cliffs,
The stars like tears above the flames.

As the fires fall and burn the grass,
I stare at my home, watching, helpless.
A song of sorrow flows through the air,
Between the sounds of hail and thunder.

Staring at the ground beneath my feet,
The valleys like sullen creases on a tired face.

Between the sadness my house burns,
Like a friend watching from far off.
The sky and the ground swallow up
All history and time not able to look back.

// RANT about anime //

I have now given up bashing bad anime, because, well, bad anime is just everywhere, and you need eternity just to bash every one of them. But I got agitated some days ago when reading Nemesis' reviews. Yes, WHAT THE HELL IS JAPAN SMOKING?

Maybe it's just anime fans' self-denial, but we need to admit that many anime is just crap. Those that can get their appearance on Newtype or Animage are already jews in the vast sea of crap. But is there an objective criteria for being crap? When we are thinking that Mouse is just a crappy show of boobs and sex-craze, are there someone on the Earth that regard Juuni Kokki as another slow, dry replicate of Fushigi Yugi minus the love-and-sex excitement?

And this website only offers highly subjective (to the point of vicious sarcasm) of some anime. So bash me on the forum if you will.

As one of you put it eloquently & spot-on, yeah, there seems to be a drought of ideas in Japan. Besides following current trends, the ideas and concepts are getting more and more inbred as most anime keeps repeating the same formulas as their stories. Most of them had to rely on panties fanservice as a crutch to support their failing stories.

Yes, you can make a thousand ideas, stories and concepts based around a familiar idea, like giant robots. It's just animekas always keep repeating the same formula that once guaranteed the success of Gundam, Tenchi Muyo and EVA. It's a profit thing or a severe fetish thing.

Another problem is that the characters portrayed are so distanced from us, we can't possibly relate to them. Maybe it's a cultural thing. Maybe it's because we are used to Shakespearean or Method forms of acting found in the visual medium. Maybe we are used to Christopher Walken's swagger or James Wood's Hyperrage, that we expect the same "quality" acting from most anime.

Also, quite spot on most women portrayed in anime these. They are mostly bitchy or ditzy. As action heroines, they are mostly posers, not players. All they did, just stand, strain eyebrow, aim gun, shoot. Why can't these girls take acting lessons from people like Chow Yun Fatt, "Beat" Takeshi, or Toshiro Mifune? Yeah, the women are sexy, but is that all?

Madzack:

Well, like it is said...most anime is well...not that good. It's like any other form of entertainment and well normal statistics..only a small % can be good. Another thing that needs to be noted for the states is that we only get the "good" stuff...or rather things that succeed in Japan. You gotta realize that the anime people talk about here is like 1% of all anime.

As the article also states, I think it's also this "self-denial" thing. I've noticed that a lot of fans think EVERYTHING is good just because it's anime and thus MUST be good.

Bah I say....

Only I say "BAH!", damn it. Apologize.

But yeah, you gotta sort the wheat from the chaff, and many anime fans don't do that. Many anime companies don't seem to do the same, either, when it comes to original ideas versus rehashes, sadly.

Maybe Western fans need to step up and begin writing stuff.
