Ummm, I think those of you who are suggesting that donations be made neccessary to upload don't really understand the true purpose of the carrot/donut, free hosting for all amvs. Now, don't get me wrong, I encourage donations and would do so myself if I had any means (which I will in one year when I'm 18 and can make my own descisions about what to do with credit card numbers and paypal and such, without those bothersome parents and their internet perinioia). However, if Phade made us pay to upload, then what exactly would make this any different from any other hosting service out there? On top of that, far fewer people would even be able to upload (my situation, for example).
Anyways, as for the original topic, I started out as an LBZer. I thought my LBZ vid was good at the time, and still think it has decent timing and such. The only guide I ever read was AD and ErMaC's, and I only read what I thought I'd need. People seem for the most part to like my vids, so I'm not going to go out of my way to please any one person but myself. But Strata, here's my question to you... If not LBZ, what else? It's fundamentally impossible for all people to be pro's when they start out, and no matter what you do there's no way many people are going to go through the guides before making a vid. And most people are going to suck no matter what they produce at first, but practice is what makes perfect. If they don't start with stuff like LBZ, then would you rather see a terrible Mononoke or Akira or Vampire Hunter D video instead? My point is, no matter what you say or do here, there's always going to be the ultra-casual AMV creator who makes a video for fun in 30 minutes and figures why not post it on the internet? And it's going to be the same no matter what they make.

Well that's kind of ironic.
I made a donation, and since the next one is late, I can't download any videos.
But ne other motherfucker who HASN'T made a donation (like my brother) can download videos all the fuck they want.
I don't think it should be mandatory, but god dammit, i want to download some videos.

As it stands Beta Testing of AMVs, especially among new editors, is discouraged with the Carrot. The problem is that, as it stands, the free hosting encourages poor quality videos to be uploaded. Once a video is up, it can't be updated with a newer version without a lot of rigamarol. As a result, the whole Peer Review thing that should help create a nice final product has essentially been tossed out the window for those without the ability to host their videos through other means.

As I think about it, this idea seem like it may be used unfairly, but now when I download local AMV's, I have to leave star ratings (I think you can't have more than 10 non-starred anime downloaded). What if the server automatically deletes videos that recieve consistently low star-ratings, say straight 1's across the board after 20 or so ratings. I'm grateful to Phade and the org folks who run this place for us fans, but personally, if I upload something that the general community says "holy crap what is this nonsense", I wouldn't mind in the least if it were flung to oblivion to make room for more respectable AMV's. That's just an idea, though, and it probably would have some big problems in the long run.
