I'm not exactly a noob anymore, but when I joined this site les than a year ago, I read ErMaC's original guide many, many times, read lots of topics here on the boards and site, read significant chunks of the Premiere manual, and watched many, many videos before actually sitting down and attempting to edit anything.

My goal was the same then as now; to create the highest quality video I possibly could, and I only stopped working on it when I felt I'd achieved all I reasonably could with my knowledge at the time.

I can still watch my first amv without cringing, even though I know I can do better now.

As to whether or not I succeded in making a good video, or have done so in my projects since then is somewhat subjective, but I'm generally pleased with the overall progress I continue to make with each project.

Perhaps I will someday be considered "great" by some, perhaps not.

I will continue to strive for excellence, regardless.

But if there's absolutely one thing I would never take away from new editors, Linkin Ball Z or not, that would be the fun of making videos for the first time.

Let them have their moment and just continue watching the latest EVA/NIN videos please. :?

I think I'm gonna make a NIN Perfect Drug video... just to fuck with everyone. That'll be fun.

You're making the assumption that ermac will have children. I'm in the school of thought that he will clone himself, ala Star Wars Episode 2, and the clones will create thousands of videos composed of nothing but strobing white flashes and frames of evangelion. The entire planet will proceed to die of mass epileptic seisures, and he will be free to reign as king in the post-apocalyptic wasteland, ala Mad Max.

Too many posts.... I think I'm getting a headache.

I would tend to agree that there is nothing wrong with people making whatever videos they want to. The Carrot/Donut was intended to provide a very inexpensive hosting option for us- there weren't ever any limitations on it that what was uploaded be 'good' or even 'not a flaming pile of cow dung'. There are obviously going to be a fair number of videos that are less than stellar. Such is life. We get things pretty much uncensored and raw here- unlike most everything else in life, where there is some layer of filtering before we see it. With movies and TV shows, there have to be many, many times more proposed and pitched than ever make it to be seen. The same goes for music- there are a lot of bands out there that we don't ever hear about, and for good reason- they're just not that good.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Some people start at a lower level than others, and everyone progresses at a different rate. I don't think it's right to want to restrict what people can do with videos or what they can post. Nobody may enjoy their video but themselves- but they still enjoy it. It would be nice if they realized a bit more that the more skilled editors are such because they work at what they do- the odds of somebody making a video like Euphoria or the likes as their first video ever are astronomically slim.

I wish it were possible to drive it home to people that they aren't going to start off with the awe and respect of the community- almost nobody is going to post the first thing they tried making in Premiere and be able to bask in the praise of their achievement. Statistically, the odds are it's going to suck. Taking pride in what you've created is one thing, but there should also be a level of humility as to, realistically, how good it is. I'm far more likely to take the time and review and critique a first video where the creator says something like "Hello- this is my first video. I'd really appreciate it if I could get some feedback on it so I can get better at doing this." than a post like: "d00d! Chek my first AMV! It r0x0rz!" I'm probably going to ignore the latter (honestly, if an announcement post uses l33t the odds are I'm not going to bother...), but they can go right on making videos as much as they want. They're not being shoved onto our computer monitors and we're not being forced to watch them. If you don't like LPZ or something else- don't download the videos. I do think the community might be a bit better if more people took the time to give good, honest critiques of people's first videos so they do improve, but the person being reviewed needs to realize they may not always like what the reviewer has to say.

I think I started off with a direction to go with this... but I think I lost it somewhere along the way. And dammit, I don't have Nate's excuse of being drunk to blame it on... >o<

One thing I did find interesting in this whole discussion was the post (I'm not going back and looking up who made it- sorry) about the Carrot eliminating the revision process by not allowing updates to the video. All told, I don't really see this as being a particularly large problem. I think if people want to get opinions on a beta version of a video, they're better off contacting people directly and finding a way to get the video to them directly. I sure don't want to be posting non-final version of my videos up where anyone can DL them. The Carrot was never intended, I believe, to be a substitute for personal web space/hosting. It was intended to be a repository for any and all AMVs so there would be more for people to watch and so that people who might not be able to get their videos out otherwise, not for people to be able to put up and take down revisions at will. I think the convenience of doing that should be worth paying for actual hosting...

well I just spent the last who knows how long reading this entire thread... gee it's getting long, prob all that flaming

so I'm going to add my 2 cents (and hope I don't get burned *puts flame suit on anyway*)

Yeah I'm a n00b, but hey so is everyone at one first eh? I first dropped by the org ages ago and if I remember correctly it was the overtly large amount of LBZ that put me off amv's for a while (and this was before the carrot so it was all direct/indirect downloads). However at this stage I didn't have a fast connection with a large download quota so I downloaded many smaller size vids and since I didn't mind DBZ I tried a couple of these. They were okay but nothing fantastic and I lost interest.

Then a little while ago I saw a really excellent amv at an anime screening and I thought I must get a copy of that and lo I came here once more. My interest was spawned anew and since I now had cable... well I'm sure you all have hard drives full of amv's else you wouldn't be here. Since then I've tended to steer clear of LBZ but that's a personal preference. LP aren't my fav band and DBZ isn't my fav anime. I have come across some excellent amv's with DBZ footage.

After some thinking I decided to try and make my own as a bit of a distraction from some bad things going on in RL. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I already had premiere and I was hoping it would be similar to photoshop which I've been playing around with for years. It wasn't. But it does have decent help files so I read and re-read those. Along with the Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides of course (if it was a book it would be well and truly worn by now). I only asked one stupid question on the forums and got that sorted.

I played around with my vid for ages (still am acutally). I asked my brother to comment on it and fixed up some things. The learning curve was steep but I really enjoyed making it. I think I probably put in too much effects and I know some people won't like the strobe but I like it and that's what matters to me. I'd appreciate comments and suggestions for improvements sure but that isn't going to happen until I put it up on the carrot. Personally I'm not putting it up until I'm really satisifed that I've done as much as I can with it.

So yes Omni some n00bs do read the guides and learn the basics before even trying to make their first amv

but as with everything you have to take the good with the bad, maybe the price of having such a fantastic resource as the org is having it flooded with amvs that have had little effort put into them, LBZ may be the classic offender but I'm sure there are some original amv's that bite just as much (with bad footage/sound quality etc)

ah well that's my longest post to date and well and truely more than 2 cents.. goodnight one and all
