Post by Moonlight Soldier » Thu Jul 03, 2003 2:11 pm

Ok don't get me wrong I LOVE Escaflowne, and I just recently bought the movie...I liked it...but what's with the animation???? Did someone else direct it or something?????? AND why for the LOVE of GOD is Van wearing FUR around his waist????

Just curious as to why...feel free to explain....

they used a different character design, the same guy who did X and Lodoss War...frankly I like his work better than the origional artist. Yes Van is wearing a leapard skin around his waiste, they gave him this violent tribal theme which I think was cool, and let loose from the overal midieval theme that the series had, and into something more unique.

Surprised you didn't complain about the big noses, which is from the artist trying to stay somewhat true to the origional character designs, but they arn't really that big if you think about actual proportions of the face, if you ever notice how big peoples noses really are at times.

Really the same guy who did Record of Lodoss Wars?? i see the resemblance to X though...meh the noses don't bother me... I mean the plot was good and the soundtrack was AWESOME so I can't really complain but the fur....*shakes head* just doesn't do anything for me.

Not entirely correct. Yuuki Nobuteru was the character designer for both the Escaflowne TV series AND the Escaflowne Movie. You are correct in that he also did character designs for the original Lodoss Wars OVA and X. He is a very highly sought after character designer.

As for the change in style...the original question...those things just sort of happen. The animation and budget were quite a bit higher, so in reality the artwork is of higher quality. However, I am with you in that I like the original TV series artwork more (and they had less move since it was a TV show vs. a movie).

As for the directors, both were done by Akana Kazaki (sp) and the creator was still Shoji Kawamori. I believe the entire original team came back for the movie. They just chose to do things differently with the large budget they had.

hey  i liked the animation for Escaflowne the movie... it had a nice deep dark kinda midevil-age theme to it...that i think they couldn't do with the tv serise because of 1 the budget and 2 the american viewing standards. I like how the movie feel more like real like and not a fairy tale...well that's my 2 cents

First off, I don't dislike the animation style either, however your last statement is a bit off.

I hate to break it to you, but the Japanese don't care about American viewing standards when creating a JAPANESE anime. It's made primarily for their people and their movie theaters/TV channels. Now importing anime and commercializing for the states is a booming industry, but I don't think the Japanese take that into account (that much) when animating. I'd also like to add that this rapid commercialization only started a few years ago (prior to the movie).

You are correct on the budget though. TV series always get less money than movies. Although, Escaflowne got the largest TV series budget (up until Bebop) and thus the near-OVA quality animation for a weekly TV series (this was unheard of).

I got a couple of my friends who used to hate anime hooked on Escaflowne. And yes, they couldn't shut up about how the animation was amazingly good in the TV series and how they loved the movie more than the series.
Just an independent opinion for ya...
