Alright is there some weird japanese culture thing that has to do with butterflies??? They've been popping up in about every possibly bishojo/Shojo/magical girl form of anime lately!!! What do they mean and why are they there? *in case you didn't realize i was currently banging my head on my computer desk in confusion*

also to add to the list dont forget in the Bebop movie where they had all those pretty butterflys. i guess thats what you see when your knocking on heaven's door. sorry i didnt help much i guess.

Well, about the huge eyes....

Me and my friend have a theory. Everyone in the US makes fun of asian people because of the 'flat noses' and 'slit like eyes'. I know, because my friend and I have to live with this everyday(we're both asian). So therefor, the anime gets American ppl back by making their noses really big and their eyes really big. Ever seen americans draw asian ppl? They do the same thing in their own way.

No, that's not the reason for the eyes and noses. The Japanese, believe it or not, don't see the 'eye difference' in the same way we white people do. for the most part, they think that the main distinction (in terms of facial features) between Asian and European people is the size of the nose! So, as everything else, this is exaggarated in anime.

Eyes, as I understand it, are primarily drawn this way because they are the most expressive part of the face. If you notice, the way the eyes are drawn in anime always changes with emotions, and I'm sure pretty well anyone here can name at least a dozen alterations to the anime eyes that indicate certain emotions.

So, eyes are there primarily for maximizing the expressive effect, I think. Which seems to work darn well.

Butterflies, flower petals, wings, etc., etc., etc. - various symbolisms, allusions to different mythologies, indications of certain emotion/athmosphere, reflections of characters' personalities - and, even just plain fashion trends (done because the creators saw the image somewhere else and thought it was cool). Not much of a secret there...
