Maybe I should ask this here since there are a lot of Gundam fans in here already...
Can some give me a basic rundown of how the various Gundam series tie togeather?
are some of the characters in more than one series or is each series "stand alone"?
and if no one can be bothered just point me to a decent site

Well I think G gundam and some others are alternate universe ones
....which means none of them run together with 0080 and gundam wing

OK...here's how they break down (roughly)Warpwind wrote:Maybe I should ask this here since there are a lot of Gundam fans in here already...

First, there's the Universal Century Timeline, for lack of a better description, this is the main timeline that kicked it all off
Series encompassed by this timeline (and, just for the Hell of it, some recurring characters listed):
-Mobile Suit Gundam
-Gundam: 08th MS Team
-Gundam 0080: War In the Pocket
-Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (recurring: Haman Khan (while earlier in the timeline, Haman first appears in Z Gundam, which was made before this.))
-Z Gundam (recurring: Amuro, Bright, Char, Hayato, Frau, Mirai, Sayla, Kai, Katz, Letz, Kikka, and Haro)
-ZZ Gundam (recurring: Bright, Haman, Hayato, Haro, Astonage, Torres, Yazan, Shinta, Qum, and more I'm prob blanking on (I confess I've yet to see ZZ))
-Gundam: Char's Counterattack (recurring: Char, Amuro, Bright, Mirai, Hathaway, Haro, Cheimin, and Astonage)
-Gundam F91 (from here on out, outside of Haro, there's no other familiar faces...Tomino decided to take the UC timeline in a new direction from here)
-V Gundam
Next, we move into the alternate timelines, these are really, in no way connected to UC (in spite of this however, Wing has the feel of being a UC retread, and Turn A was made as a 'What if?' for if the timelines were all connected)
have the Future Century:
-Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Then, After Colony
-Gundam Wing
-Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (not really much since listing the recurring chars, 9/10s of the series cast.)
After War
-Gundam X
Correct Century
-Turn A Gundam
Cosmic Era
-Gundam SEED
Hope that helps

The original Mobile Suit Gundam reminds me of a more violent Mickey Mouse Club, since you litterally have a mecha carrier/space battleship White Base being run by a bunch of angst-driven teenagers. The mecha designs are also pretty crappy (I mean, c'mon, the Zaku and Zaku II don't look realistic enough until 0083).
I liked Gundam Wing, because it's mecha were more detailed (I especially love the OZ-MS-07 Tragos Mobile Armor). However, the philosophy is geared towards little kids, and follows the same old "save the world from the plummetting debris" plotline. The minute some anime series clears a climax that doesn't have to do with hurtling meteorites shaped like tetrahedrons, thermonuclear devices, or some major doomsday event, is the day anime will be completely accepted in America.
I'd have to say Gundam 0083 is my favorite. It's just long enough that you don't ask yourself "Can they drag this out any longer?", like Gundam Wing. Also, the mecha are just cool (the specialized mobile armors GP-03 A1, and the one Gato pilots is awesome!).
Char's Counterattack is pretty cool. I haven't watched enough Mobile Suit Gundam to see the development and use of fin funnels until then, so I was a little confused for a while. But again, the plot is the same old "the Earthlings got you down? Hit it with a rock!".
