Seeing as I know strange people, my friends got into anime with Fruits Basket. And now my friend Christina has this crazed obsession with Tohru. Sometimes she'll walk around going 'I'm Tohru' with her hands clasped together. And my friend Gabby, jesus, she starts screaming about Kyo being sexy. Anyway enough of that.
Fruits basket is good for people who like cutesy stuff, Ai Yori Aoshi and His and Her Circumstances.
Chobit's might work too.
Princess Mononoke, Trigun, and Cowboy Bebop are really good. I think those are the most likely to work.
Love Hina might also work since it's a nice mixture of comedy and romance.
Or whatever I'm just throwing out random ideas here.
Introducing anime to other people.

Damn, Banana Fish is a good manga.
For the right kind of person, Lain is perfect. The 'right kind of person' is anyone who likes Apples, or as Sarah said, people who like arty, thinking works.
Miyazaki is a given, as is CB. You can do worse than Trigun, although it takes a while to get going.
And Read or Die. Definitely Read or Die.
A friend of mine (with the largest anime collection of anyone I know) recommends Tenchi Muyo! for this purpose.

I forgot to mention in my first post that I don't feel that KareKano is a good starter series. Not only because of the fairly large amount of the aforementioned silly comedy stuff, but also because of the reliance of the plot on a basic understanding of the Japanese school system, Japanese culture, other anime... The same is true to an even greater extent for Azumanga Daioh or FLCL. Although I love these series, they're just not meant for it.

I was gonna say this even if you hadnt added to fact that someone would. But my brother "hated" the show. He only watched episode one and the movie and said there was to much deadspace (I.E. The swordfish getting ready for takeoff from the bebop). I saw this to when i watched episode one but what somepeople dont understand that in the first few episode you are being showen the things that will be in the anime, not to mention with bebop this is in beautiful art. So if he actually took the time to watch the whole thing i seriously doubt he would "hate" it there for after saying that i have come to the point where i realised this post had no point in the end...dwchang wrote:Not that you needed it, but (+10 for Ian)AbsoluteDestiny wrote:Escaflowne is always a good one for people who dont think they like anime - but make sure they get to episode 2
I have to agree with Ian on this one and not only because it's my favorite show. Escaflowne is a great first anime since it has so many different genres in it that almost anyone will find something they like be it mecha, action, drama, romance, great character designs/development, great animation, great music and so on. I have yet to show that show to someone and them not "get into it" by Episode 4.
Another great suggestion is Cowboy Bebop. It's Episodic in nature, which US people are used to with our cartoons and the art is amazing. It's a great show and I don't know anyone who *hates* it (now someone will read this and prove me wrong ).
The one problem with showing "great" anime is that it's harder to appreciate "good" or "mediocre" anime later. I have found that problem to exist with myself as well as my friends I got into anime with stuff like Escaflowne and Kenshin. Then again...it's safer to just show them something great since the point is to get them into it right?
Just my two cents.
Oh well, anywayyyyy, for a first anime i would deffinitly go mainstream(I.E trigun, bebop, I would say esca but ive only seen a couple videos and havnt bought it yet, its on the to do list 8) ). By starting off with mainstream you should be able to introduce the person in a good way to the world of anime in which they can then expand and watch others. I guess
Oh and this is totaly off topic, but does anyone know where i can upload a small sig that DOSENT have a bandwith limit(IE village photo) and dosent now make you pay (IE the sonfabitchs at clubphoto) Help would be greatly apreciated

kare kano is a great anime to start somone off with if they like dramas ... if they're die hard action fans then thats the best way to make them hate anime.Jung Ikari wrote:I love "NEON GENESIS EVANGLION", but it's too high for a person to start...
I think that "KARESHI KANOJO NO JIJYO" is a good anime to introduce a person to the anime's world.
Anyway, they are made of Hideaki Anno... and that's all!
