Thirteen is only about the most commonly recognized 'unlucky' number in Western culture. The Japanese love the Friday the 13th movies, especially the Jason character, so the meme has somewhat crossed over in the association of 13 with evil.

i see, what part of Western Culture regards 13 as unlucky? Because i know that Italians think Friday the 13th is a lucky day, i have no fucking clue why but they do.
Last I heard, the association of 13 and bad things comes from Christianity. Apparently, Judas was the betrayer of Christ AND his 13th Apostle, and since this was considered a bad thing to have occured, the number 13 gained a bad connotation or something.
Why the Italians consider it a good thing is beyond me.
As for the guns, I'd just write off as the Japanese lack any real gun culture that can pick apart these sorts of things. Their loss, I suppose
.
