Anyone had an AMV op turn out to be a song Review?
Its happened to me a couple of times (once recently) and I really want to know if you guys have had this happen to you and how you feel about these ops. Personally I think its kinda silly, definitely not a big fan of it, but eh, I guess it is an opinion
So, how do you feel about getting an opinion and reading "I really didn't like the song, it wasn't my taste at all, too boring/fast/slow/silly/unintelligible/British (yes I have gotten one of those) etc. etc." followed by absolutely no info (good or bad) regarding the video?
Do you think they are purge worthy, as they really aren't written with malicious intent (from what I've seen, and only for the most part), but then again, its not an AMV review, just an M review.
Thanks for any opinions you all are willing to share, and please, if you are going to post examples or anything of that nature, don't post any names. I'm not making this thread to single people out or publicly burn anyone.

Well, it depends, for example, I like critiquing the song choice based upon the anime and what the creator was trying to do with the video (usually get this from the info page). I focus on what the music actually DOES and DOESNT do for the video, I don't just critisize based on my musical taste.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

id have to say that the music is 1/2 the vid, so when oping an AMV i tend to list all that i liked and didnt like about footage arangment and song choice. omni can tell ya all about that ^_^
ya have to remember that this is an art form, their are people who will like it, and thos who wont. you cant please everyone all the time, but you can please me by making another vid like that Appetite for Dynamite one ^_~ or oping one of my vids =O

Psshh... that's really unfair.
Were I to review in that manner, I would slam virtually EVERY vid that I've seen - my views of music are horribly biased, and my interests - highly restricted.
But I didn't, and my review average is somewhere about 8.
Because I'm not so much interested in the song itself as I am in a) how well it's synched b) how well it's used in the AMV; how the lyrics/instrumentals allter/guide your perception of the visual.
But these reviews do happen to people.
This also makes it more risky to create AMV's to obscure/generally disliked music. Which is why I highly respect those who forego the concern/embarassment over the use of some unpopular song and just go and do what they think should be done (example: dwchang's 'Glory of Love' vid. Too many people hate that song for no particular reason... yet, a great AMV)

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

To paraphrase Yogi Berra, AMVs are 90% music, and the other half is video. I think it's okay to give an opinion on the song choice, any editing of the song, and so on. Those things are critically important. I don't think it's really an excuse to say that the AMV creator isn't the performer and can't control the quality of the song, because the AMV creator has the chance to choose a good song over a bad one. But music tastes are very personal, and if the reviewer doesn't "get" the particular style of music I wish they would take that into account. The review is supposed to be of the AMV creator's work, not the reviewer's musical taste. I haven't gotten any reviews I thought were totally stupid, and I sure hope I haven't left any such, but I haven't given or received very many, so...
There's a video I'm reviewing today where I really like the song, and I'm having to guard against going in the other direction - marking the video higher than it deserves just because it's a good song. I'm actually watching it with the sound turned off to help separate out my opinion of just the video part.

I've gotten one recently for my newest AMV. I really hate it, because they just rate the song instead of the work. Why would somebody even download a video if they hated the song already?

Haha! Thanks! I was going to reply with that one.Otohiko wrote:This also makes it more risky to create AMV's to obscure/generally disliked music. Yeah Wonka, I agree. It *should be* a review about the actual video: how does it flow with the music (regardless of if I like it)? Is there a concept? etc.
Too many people take their personal opinions about a song into it and dock in things that are unrelated. I've had it happen too many times since I chose a sappy 80's song .
Yeah, that's exactly what I do. I *try* my best to grade everything else objectively. I mean, if a video does a really incredible job with a song I hate (i.e. it flows with it, there's a good concept, they follow-through on it, etc.), I still give them high marks in overall since they overall used the song effectively. The only true personal score in the entire review is "reviewability" and people would know that if they read what each of the scores is about.EarthCurrent wrote:I try to only comment on song choice in the Re-Reviewable Score. My ability to rewatch a vid seems related to how much I like the song in combination to the video. If I hate the song, I'm not going to watch the vid all that often, so I knock off points for that particular category.
At the same time, it is a person's opinion and there's not much we can do about it other than disagree.
