Yeah we still have it even though it's a little bit outdated now. Cristina is planning to do a new one (new vid, not a remaster) as soon as she finishes the series on DVD (italian edition ).

I'd contest that, personally.

Having recently made an amv with Saikano (a show with no motion whatsoever) I don't think the difference is as great as you'd imagine. In a recent video I made, some of the best animation was actually found in Ranma which was 10 years older than most of the other shows I was using. (unfortunately the basic picture quality wasn't as good, but that's another thing).

I'd also contest that the vibrancy of the colours in shows like Aim fot the Ace and the excellent character design in Rose of Versailles really make up for it. They're so stylish that they are instantly more appealing for video editing than many plain characterless modern shows like Ai Yori Aoshi and the like.

True...RoV, on further consideration on my end, is not really so badly done. Many of my poor impressions were probably from the fact that I've seen this show only off digisubs that looked as though they had been made from VCDs (typical MPEG1 color distortions, mass pixel blocking in action scenes, etc). There's a lot to be said for the old school...even though Ace wo nerae occasionally looks like the studio got their production budget and collective lunch money confused.

And hey, it's not the source, it's the editor. I've actually managed a fast-paced action/drama vid to SaiKano, and an Ai Yori Aoshi video in which Sakuraba Aoi dies.

(not that either is going to be challenging the top 100 anytime soon, however...it's the editor, not the source)

There was briefly a Japanese R2 DVD edition of RoV. Unfortunately I think it is now out of print. The quality is pretty good from my point of view, on the other hand I watch a fair amount of old stuff so maybe I'm used to it.

I've had a plan for a RoV AMV using a particular 70's pop song in the works for a while but it has taken a back seat to some other things (including one project based on a 1960's anime). Frankly I've held off on the project because of the time investment of assembling footage from 40 eps of TV and because it would be an action video w/ lots of clips.

RoV is high on my list of fave anime, and although I have the fansubs, I'm not inclined to spend time removing subtitles for a video.

There was a live action version of RoV called Lady Oscar. It was a Franco-English production released a year before the Japanese TV series and directed by Jacques Demy. Some say it is a "lost" work of his.

As a movie it was a bore, completely lacking in ambition. On the other hand, it did have nice sets and costumes (and for those reasons might make for a decent music video).

The action scenes were especially bad. I would hope that the movie was not intended to capitalize on the success of the two Musketeer movies that Richard Lester made just a few years prior, both of which were far better films.

CD Japan used to carry the Pioneer (R2) DVD of Lady Oscar. I don't know if it's still available.

if you're looking for RoV, I have some high quality fansubs if anyone is interested. However, I only have the first 10 eps. The other 3/4 is yet to be subbed.

I have not seen the series yet, but read a synopsis and it sounded pretty interesting.

It's OOP at CD Japan. Anime Jungle has both unopened box sets at the low, low price of 31,000 Yen (~$260) each. 8)

Actually, it looks like it's in stock at AMOTokyo, as well. Only $230 each and I bet the shipping and handling will be cheaper than AnimeJungle. What a bargain.

By the way, it's listed under "Rose of Versailles" at both sites in case you really are interested.
