I am playing with MPEG-4 (not Divx... sorry but i don't like propriotary solutions) right now...
it still has a way to mature... i don't like what it does to interlaced video... (shimmering blocks)
which means that everybodies videos would have to be de interlaced which reduces quality
MPEG-4 ISO streams with multi pass VBR high profile video and 128 kilobit AAC audio MIGHT be able to make the grade... but not until i found a very very good mpeg-4 encoder....
and yes... i am experimenting with that... but again.... its only experiments.... still a while to go (need to find a good unix MPEG-4 player before i am compleatly happy)

I'm not sure how good it is, but I know that there's a Linux version of "The Player" from http://www.divx.com I'm not sure if it just plays DivX MPEG-4 files, or any MPEG-4, but you might want to check it out if you haven't already.
I know what you mean about the de-interlacing. I forgot about that. (It's oh so much fun fixing frames that weren't deinterlaced correctly) ^^;

Sorry Petro, when I said "superior" I mean't in terms of accessibility.
I know what the mpeg4 standard is capable of (although I still think it loses too much colour information for it ever to be really useful, I can make some awesome mp4 encodes) but it's just not practical. It's going to take a long time before the mp4 standard is a standard that PCs will play effortlessly. At the moment that is far form the case. It's still incredibly new.
Although I didnt mention it I was also thinking of the problem of deinterlacing too. It's time consuming stuff and far too problematic for the organisers.
BTW, when reading my swearing, if you say it with an english accent you'll notice that it was in jest. I actually forgot the smilie ^_^
As for blizzard choosing it, it's simply better than anything else at small sizes (except realplayer 9 which is better for low bitrates but it a locked codec) which means lots of footage on cds. This doesn't mean that it's still better than a good analogue recording because it's not, really, (especially at the bitrates you are talking about) and it has none of the VHS standardisation advantages.

right now my opinion of MPEG-4 is it is shaping up to be a very good internet distrobution format
but should not even be considered for high quality archiving and distrobution
MPEG-2 is still king for that
the only advantage i have found for MPEG-4 over MPEG-2 is the audio
AAC is very very very sweet

Damn..... mean't? Where's Jbone when you need him? lolAbsoluteDestiny wrote:Sorry Petro, when I said "superior" I mean't in terms of accessibility.
Anywho, if anyone's still checking the thread here. Why enter Pro? Well, not really why.... but why should I? I'd say at the moment - for me to enter would just be foolish. Who the hell would enter the Pro contest when it's their first AMV? The reason I ask is 'cause I am curious to what the "Pro" people think of the Exposition. Would your Pro entry end up in the Expo if you didn't want to send the tapes and pay the money and time?
There is nothing wrong with sin that cannot be fixed with right.

Skee: I thought the same thing last year.. that why should I enter my vid, it's my first... and I haven't even one any awards.. but that didn't stop people from entering videos last year... at this point it's too late.. but never let details like that discourage you. The only difference.. from Expo, is you can only enter one video, the deadline is much earlier.. and judging is different.Skeebadeetz wrote:Damn..... mean't? If you're unsure.. then enter your video for Expo.
