My dad likes Mecha anime, especially Escaflowne (he was dissapointed with the movie), he thought Akira was quite good even if he did fall asleep near the end...although if i mention the words Dragon Ball Z he will automatically say:

"But you've grown out of that now, haven't you?"

it makes me cringe even though i HAVE grown out of DBZ.

My dear mum on the other hand...

When she tells people i watch anime she calls it "Japanese Cartoons" which i think is WORSE "The Japanese Animation". When i used to watch DBZ she'd sit down and for the whole time go on about how crap it was, granted it was the dub but she used to go on about the jap version saying "How can you read and watch at the same time?" to which i'd reply "Sum of us can do more than one thing at a time, mum" to which she would sulk out the room.

My 11 year old sister loves Son Gohan from DBZ but hates most other animes except for ep 9 of Eva, she thinks it funny.

BTW do your parents ever say to other adults: "My son/daughter makes these music video things i don't watch them but he likes them...do you want to watch one? Hey (son/daughter name here) show (person who has never watched anime in his/her life before's name here) one of your music videos."
I'm bored and you're dumb. A match made in heaven.

I buy Kite. Go home and pop it in the DVD player and start watching it. My mom comes down from upstairs and sits down to watch it. I have never seen Kite, but knew it was violent. My mom has never seen an anime. So my first thought was "Oh, Shit." And I was right. Even though I warned her that it was violent and stuff, she apparently didn't believe me because of the remarks she said. And she litteraly gasped when they guy in the beginning kicked the old lady and called her a cunt.

My mom did the same thing at a later date. I can't remember what anime I was watching, but it was also a violent one. So now she thinks that all anime is violent like Kite.

Whats also funny bout her is that she doesn't call it Japanese Animation or Japanese Cartoons. She thought all cartoons were called anime for some odd reason now. Seriously.

All parents just want their kids to be succsesfull in life.

Your dad probably worries that anime isn't as profitable as a career that he'd like you to have, and sees that you're getting more and more drawn into it. He probably worries you'll make some sort of living out of this and not have very much money.

This is what my Dad used to do with me and my music.

I started getting really into music around 11 or 12, and started really learning about the bands I was listening too, learning of more bands, and buying TONS AND TONS of cDs. My Dad worried I was wasting money and this would never get me anywhere.

Well, when I turned 15 I started going to lots of concerts, like, LOTS. I started meeting the band sin person, and hyping them, and I got on some street teams and started doing promotion.

Well as of today I know tons of bands personaly, and I do very professional promotion for various bands and record labels.

If I wanted to make a career out of this, I'd have PLENTY of money.

My Dad sees this and h'es stopped caring about how into music I am, now he supports it.

Just try and show your Dad how profitable Anime can be. Show him some anime artowrk that was drawn by some American artists, that sells at top dollar and stuff.

As long as your Dad is confident that you're taking a good path in life, i'm sure he'll support you fully in what ever you want to do.

My mom only likes really mainstream movies, basically, so anime just fits into the overall category of "odd movies" that I like and she doesn't. (Like dark comedies, fantasy movies, that kind of thing.) She just shrugs it all off, but doesn't give me a hard time about it. Same with music, really. I don't mind that at all.

My dad apparently watches hentai and plays hentai games, but I really wish I hadn't heard about it. 'Cause I have nothing against it in general, but, you know, I just don't want to think about that particular instance. :x I don't think he has seen any non-hentai anime, but would probably like some of it if I made any effort to convert him (sci-fi stuff, action stuff, things like the movies he already likes). Buuuut I really don't feel like putting forth the effort, 'cause he might start thinking of it as a big "bonding" thing, and I'm just not keen on, you know, going anime shopping with my "let's have some family time, kids!" dad. Especially with my tastes and his right-wing leanings, which, uh, won't mix well at all.

But anyway.

yeah I see what you're saying about the bonding thing.

I played some music for my Dad one night, and he kept trying to keep me up nights after to play music. I was just like, "DAD! Going to bed now! Goodnight!"

He got attatched to it so quick.

My dad likes some of the music videos here but when he see some special effect that you couldnt do with windows movie maker he awalys says "I wonder how long it took those nerds to do that" and it pisses me off  I tried to show him a trial version of Ulead Video Studio 7 and he just said that WMM can do all thae same stuff and more.

My mom thinks I get possesed when I watch DBZ or EVA. I got grounded when she found an Hand Maid May Dvd I borrowed from a friend and got him gorund too by calling his parents. :(
Why do we try to keep our sanity when losing it is so much more fun?

Therefore, DO NOT LET YOUR MOTHER TOO CLOSE TO YOUR ANIME COLLECTION.

Parents should not watch anime unsupervised(with the exception of those that REGULARLY do) . :?
I like bugging people. Deal with it.

My mom tries to be interested and "shows off" to others how much she "knows". For example:"Hey, isn't that one of those Japanese cartoons you like? You watch that cartoon, right?"-It isn't so bad, but if you're among old people, they only clue into the word "cartoon".

Dad could be annoying about it sometimes. He'll sit and watch a moment or so, and then he'll imitate one of the characters. Like I really need to hear someone poke fun @ the Japanese language when a climax happens. Argh.
