Any Miyazaki film. I'd try Princess Mononoke first since it's the most mature of his films. Then follow up with Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky, and My Neighbor Totoro.

As for your buddy/girlfriend, it really depends on what they like.

If they like:

Action - Rurouni Kenshin, Ninja Scroll, Fist of the North Star
Comedy - Excel Saga, Dragon Half
Romantic Comedy - His and Her Circumstances, Maison Ikkoku, Fruits Basket
Sci-Fi - Galaxy Express 999, Vandread, Outlaw Star
Fantasy - Escaflowne, Magic Knight Rayearth, Cardcaptor Sakura
Horror - Vampire Hunter D, Hellsing
Reality is for people who lack imagination.

Ditto, and ditto.

Also, IMO when you introduce newbies to anime, comedies are the most risky - I've had tricky moments with trying to explain the exaggerated expressions and so on.

If they really are new to this, I'd say stick near a genre they already like and look for more or less "realistic" animation style - I've had much luck with CB in that respect, while shoujo anime with its bubbly style loses most people fast.

Then you can move on from that into more artistic/stylized stuff if they get used to the form.

Best of luck. I love evangelizing.

Nah. It would be merely for shock value.

Of course in mid-life crisis mode as they are the results could be twice as disturbing
