Language/Cursing Filter

Post by burntoast » Mon Sep 01, 2003 12:45 pm

I've done a comprehensive search on any forum rules/policies against the use of explicit language in the forums, but I couldn't find any. So this thread may be the first of its kind. :) It's just an idea I've been thinking of for the past couple of minutes while eating breakfast.. It seems as if more children, around let's say ages 10 to 14, are browsing our forums these days. But some of our forum members indulge themselves in cursing randomly or even directly towards others. The newer, younger members might have parents/guardians who don't wish to expose their kids to such things.. I'm not sure if this would work with phpBB, but I'm suggesting a minimal and effective language filter. I think that words such as "ass" and "damn" should be excluded, since they aren't as serious as other frequently used words. The words which are explicit could be asterisk'd out, like f*** and s***. Just a suggestion though. :P

While I don't agree in a mandatory filter, I think it would be nice for a filtering option to be available in each persons settings, so they could enable it if they want to.

Hey,

But it's easier to spot stupid people when they curse. ;-)

And once you start filtering things for younger people who pass through, you'll have to go a lot further than just a language filter. If you think parents would be upset by a few curse words, how do you think they'll react to some of the sexual content in posts? How about the penis metaphors in sigs (you know who you are)? If this forum is going to be suitable for little kids (10-14) we'll have to change a lot more than just the cursing - no more talking about sex, death, or any adult content at all.

I don't think anyone really wants to try and make a filter to block all adult discussions/references on this forum. At best, a small warning that the 'forum may contain people who post things not suitable for minors' would be more in order than trying to clean up the place for the young 'uns. I can't see people suddenly agreeing not to talk about sex because children might be reading the posts.

Aww fuck, I'm done for. =P

But seriously, I really REALLY hate cencorship and I highly agree with Arigatomyna. If you start with the language filter, don't do it half ass and leave all other adult oriented innuendos intact. Get rid of one thing, get rid of the rest.

However, I do agree that we should look out for the children, but there's only so much we can do without going over board and becoming Fundamentalist assholes.

my 2 cents...

If I remember right, when you join it makes you check a box. You're either (a) Under 14 or (b) 14 or older.

It wouldn't be too hard to exclude topics with names with "hentai" and Yaoi" in the subject line and profanity filters arn't too tough to create(or so I've been told).

I say make these filters mandatory for those under 14, and once a year goes by, they can have an option somewhere to turn it off.

Also, MSN has a filter that doesn't allow you to post certain words("ass" being a maor one).

Whenever you write ANYTHING that has "ass" in it and you try to post it, a window comes up telling you "You cannot post the word "ass", please rewrite it" or something like that.

I believe that'd be great for the under 14s to have, as well.

Some kids curse a bit too much...

(Not that I'm excluded from that category or anything..)
