Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time"
I was just wondering what other people think of, what I think is a fantastic series (I've just started book 4 "The Shadow Rising")
No spoilers plz.

I have kinda mixed feelings about it...
I've read up until Crossroads of Twilight (still need to buy that one)...I like theh concept and I think the story and his writing style are awesome...but I find that in the later books...he just kinda starts saying without warning or anything...ok...you're going to be a bad guy now...like VERY often...which I guess makes sense with the way the whole series goes...but it's just annoying...as if he can't decide what to do next...
Make no mistake though...I'm gonna read em all

When I 1st started reading the 1st book i kept thinking it was a LOTR knock off but as i got through the book i realized it was different.
Some of the best books i've ever read in my opinion. Discworld books are kool too though...

Not if you don't like science-fiction. =P But I'll reserve judgment because I haven't read it yet. Of course, a friend lent me Cryptonomicon for almost a year and I never even cracked the cover. Oh well, one of these days I'll get around to all the books that people recommend to me.kthulhu wrote:All I ever read are second hand sci-fi novels from my local thrift store.
And "Snow Crash" owns fantasy stuff.

Jordan aped Tolkien's style intentionally in the beginning as a way to ease readers into his own, quite different, style.)v(ajin Koji wrote:LOL.Moonlight Soldier wrote:I have kinda mixed feelings about it...

As evidenced by the sig quote, I am a fan. I have read the books twice through, and have two copies of each (one set for display, and one set for reading). I know more trivia, theories and background than almost anyone else I know except for my friend Ezra.
The books often undergo slow periods, especially The Crossroads of Twilight, but it's worth sticking with them because there is big stuff coming. Book 13 is projected as a reasonable time to expect Tarmon Gaidon and the End of the series.
Oh, I also know several phrases in Old Tongue
However, George R. R. Martin's 'A Song of Ice and Fire' is A LOT BETTER and should be read by all of you. Now. Honestly, it's faster-paced, has very strong characters, is shorter (3 books, and it'll be six when finished), and the level of intelligence that Martin shows in his plotting is mind-boggling. More political than heroic, but still riveting. I challenge anyone to read A Game of Thrones and not be thoroughly entertained.
Otherwise, the best series IMO are L. E. Modesitt Jr's 'The Magic of Recluce' (11 books, complete) for its philosophy and intelligence, as well as a flawless non-linear plot, and David Farland's Runelords, for its heart, soul and very clever magic system.
