Subbed-vs-dubbed

Post by skanks » Sat Aug 17, 2002 5:57 am

Now, i prefer Subbed, but i know had it not been for the dubbing affect i would of just laughed at the Japanese voices without giving it a chance. But once I had seen EVA i started to watch quite a few anime's all of which were dubbed. I think it's only after you begin to enjoy Anime you like Subbed, But i watch whatever i get my hands on which is how i started with the subbed, i'm starting to watch some of my dvd's on subbed now however. I Find in alot of fan subs they let you in on alot of the culture. And, now i can actually learn japanese and say random weird things to throw people of at nightclubs!!
Hell, if I hadn't grown into Subbed, i wouldn't have such odd signatures.
I saw a single ep of DBZ in subbed, that weird little bald guy sounds really strange...

Princess mononoke dubbed was alrite and so was Akira, but most of the time i like subtitles better than dubbed.

in my opinion, it really depends on what anime...
Akira and Princess Mononoke were both great of dub...
so is cowboy bebop...
but some like.. really need some work done...
i mean, have any of you heard the fushigi yuugi dub?

Saber Marionette J to X

default settings when you click "play"...

Japanese with NO SUBTITLES!

?????

I was stunned like, "HEY, WHAT'D I JUST BUY!" Then I checked and altered the settings.

Yes, the SMJ series dub sucks as a whole... :(

But, I wouldn't say "100%" all dubs are not as good as subs.

My fav dubs that I'd never drop and believe to be SUPERIOR to the subs...

Gasaraki
Nadesico
Elf Princess Rane (watched it subbed, text scrolled so fast that my eyes hurt and I realized the jokes were funnier when translated to English)
Those Who Hunt Elves (adding English references like, "Oh yeah! This is VEGAS BABY!" and, "I'M TELLING YOU IT'S A GAWD DAMN DENNYS!!!" is much better than using a "Japanese" reference most people don't know about.

My favorite dubs would be Cowboy Bebop and Samurai X OAVs... (Samurai X, someone shoot the moron who made that title but bless the director who did the voice actors SOO GOOD...)

As far as I'm concerned, I hold the Voice Director more responsible for the dub quality than the actors themselves. I've heard some va's sound great in some anime and crap in others.
"Strength lies in action. Let the weak react to me..." - Kamahl, Pit Fighter from Magic: the Gathering
"That is a mistake many of my enemies make. They think before they act. I act before I think!" - Vortigern from Merlin ('98)
"I AM REBORN!" - Dark Schneider Bastard!! OAV

Subbed are soo much better. But sometimes voices of little kids (especially little girls) are the most annoying things in the world. You just want to shoot them or something!

if you could have a choice between a perfect dub, and a perfect sub, what would it be?

exactly, dubs usualy turn out crappy, but if they are done well they are better than subs.
