*** Linux Mandrake 9.2 ( easiest to work with and grasp. )
SuSE Linux ( processor sensitive )

If you are going to do video editing and compositing on a Linux system you'd best be prepared to do a lot of work on your own, as 98% of the people here can't help you and I suck at explaining things in text format.
The only other people I can think of (on this board) who have had experience working with video on GNU/Linux systems are koronoru, bttws, urugue, and kith. I know Dugan Chen was at least playing around with the idea but I don't know if he's on the .org.

If the box will be used for almost anything else, though, it's not too hard to work with.
I've used Slackware, Gentoo, and Debian. You probably don't want to use any of those three just now, as they all involve much in the way of manual setup. It's better to get started on something like RedHat or LindowsOS and move to a more advanced setup when you feel comfortable doing so.
By the way, they're Linux distributions, or GNU/Linux systems. Linux is the kernel; GNU is (usually) the system. (You can build a system around the Linux kernel using proprietary
Trivial nomenclature point, yes, but it really does matter. Linux is used to refer to both "the GNU operating system" and "the Linux kernel", and it gets confusing unless we distinguish between them.

I personally use Gentoo, as does trythil.
In my opinion, Gentoo is the best out of Mandrake, Redhat, and Gentoo.
Gentoo, although it looks hard to use, is not that hard to setup, and use, despite the fact it's compiled from source unless you purposely use binaries such as RPM or DEB.
I'm on Gentoo Linux 1.4_rc4 with a 2.6.0-test3-mm4 kernel (2.6.0-test3 mm-sources), it works great, and there's a speed difference between the 2.4.x series of kernels and 2.6 series, the 2.6 series being about 20% faster in my experiences.
Another cool thing about Gentoo is that, because it's compiled from source, it can be customized for your specific computer, not just compiled with basic generic defaults for your processor.
