I'll try my hardest to get something in for the AMV contest ^_^

I can understand what people have said about digital submissions, but I also agree that just having something on tape will be much easier, as VHS is a very open format and probably the most compatible. Thus when I submit it'll be on VHS ^_^

Perhaps you may want to accept VCD, SVCD and DVD submissions. If you have a DVD player, these formats could probably play back smoothly and then you could record them onto VHS for the contest or something.

This is a small first year convention, I think it's far better they go with just VHS tapes. This will limit who enters the contest which is a good thing.

If it also means a bunch of 'professional' AMV creators who only want to submit on SVHS or DVD or MPEG or some other format think they are too good to submit via VHS (for what ever reason), good... that means less people in the contest.

You'll still get plenty of entrys. You'll get entrys from those who like submitting via VHS.

Accepting Digital submissions or other formats means you'll get entries from everyone with an Internet connection, etc... Accepting only VHS entries means, you'll be accepting entries from people who REALLY want to enter your contest because they were willing to take the time to export the video to VHS and send it to you in the way and format you requested.

It's your contest don't let people change how you run it. For a first time contest, going with VHS is the best thing to do, as you get less problems to deal with. You'll have enough other problems to deal with, without having to deal with different formats as well.

None of us said we we think we're "too good," we said we're "not physically able." Slight difference.

Considering that most people nowadays rip DVDs, make their videos completely digitally, and have no means of outputting to VHS, I don't see how this makes them "professional" creators who "think they are too good" for VHS.

Not only that- but if you think about it, the 'professional' creators are more likely to have the knowledge and the means to output their digitally created videos onto VHS if they so desire. I think I've seen nearly as many questions in the help forums asking, "How do I get my video onto a video tape?" as ask how to encode a video for digital submission.

That said, I can see if the people running the contest for whatever reason lack either the skill, knowledge, or equipment to accept digital submissions that keeping it simpler would be a good idea. Having a contest that perhaps doesn't look as clear as the original DVDs is, in the end, secondary to having a contest that actually works and doesn't break down. I would however echo the earlier comment about looking into accepting DVD and SVCD submissions (hell, maybe even VCDs- they're probably as good in some cases as people's output to VHS) using a DVD player. A $50 or less Apex player will play all of them, and the submissions could be dubbed off to a master tape for the contest from the DVD player- which will likely need to be done anyway. Swapping tapes in and out of the VCR constantly during the contest is just a bad idea. Take it from a tech guy who has had to do it- make a tape ahead of time!
