Well, that's the only other reason I brough it up, dubbing from VHS to a VHS master tape will really degrade the quality and lots of people were upset with the quality of the AWA Pro VHS tapes...
I agree about how important it is to have the contest work out right. That is #1, but if quality degrates too much for a big projection screen, a lot of creators tend to get up set over this or not bother so I just think it may be worth while to get help if possible to try to keep things digital. Even playing the contest on DVD. Most of the issues that occure in contests are based on the equipment/DVD not being tested. I personally NEVER will play a contest on different equipment unless I've had access to it and it test out fine. (at all the contest I ran, I had then run from computer and had a VCR running the contest at the same time so I cound just switch to it if my system and it's backup went down. I even had a second SVHS tape handy). Same thing can even happen with VHS machines and tracking issues in the HIFI track.
So personally I don't think it's technology, but more the lack of testing and having backups (at all the contest I ran, I had then run from computer and had a VCR running the contest at the same time so I cound just switch to it if my system and it's backup went down. I even had a second SVHS tape handy). and the people who understand it doing the tech work. ALSO, running a contest and doing the tech work does not have to be done by the same person, so if a coordinator insn't versed in tech stuff, it may help to have someone who is doing the tech part. NOw, I do understand that that person has to be trused to do the job required of course...
Bascially, I'm just trying to put out some suggestions. I've ran mutimedia stuff at cons for over 10 years and foundhaving right planning, equipment and backups as much as possible always helps....

If you can't export to VHS, who's fault is that but your own. Don't complain to the convention that you can't submit in the format they request.

I think you're taking it just a *tad* too far, here, bordering on pure rudeness.anneke wrote:If you can't export to VHS, who's fault is that but your own. Don't complain to the convention that you can't submit in the format they request.
It's not that people are *complaining* that they can't export to VHS; it's that people are simply *noting* that it's becoming more and more of a trend that VHS is simply being eliminated from the "must-have" set of hardware AMV editors choose to have.
Like Hsien and others have said, more and more people are just doing everything straight digital these days (rip the DVDs, edit them digitally on the computer, export a final version there, and encode to MPEG-2). For the vast majority of conventions, this is MORE than enough (nevermind usually the preferred submission format).
That's all ^^

If you guys can get digital subs setup, I'll definitely send something in.animeamiee wrote:hey hey now everyone, calm down
We are currently working out details on how to accept digital submissions!
But it's hard to say exactly right now cause we're not sure what equipment we will have access to.
We're trying to get this resolved as quickly as possible ^_^

Point taken.
But nine times out of ten there are local authorities that can do this for a very small fee (about the same price as a single VHS tape at Wal~mart.) A friend may even have the necessary hardware. You know enough people here, there has to be someone you trust enough to do a good Digi-VHS conversion.
Though I do agree; in the age in which we live it is asinine for a convention not to have some semblance of digital submission.
