Christian AMV's

Post by Geirr » Mon Oct 13, 2003 7:31 pm

Just two more cents on this topic:

One impediment might be that most Japanese, and the animators who serve them their entertainment, don't 'get' Christianity. The culture takes more of a shotgun apporach to religion and religious symbols; we lived there and saw some of the oddest storefront displays for Christmas - I think the strangest one I saw had a bunch of reindeer & a sleigh parked on a snow-white church roof, and next to it they had lashed a Santa to a cross in the snowy churchyard. (!) Umm, merry, yeah. You too.

So in anime, you will see kaballahs and you'll see combined, more-the-merrier conglomerations of symbols, like the cross with a star of David on it (Phantom Quest Corps, was it?) But, in general the animators don't really have a clue about what happens at the altar of a Christian church (to be fair, most Christians of one denomination probably couldn't explain another denomination's rites & rubrics with exactitude - ask a AoG church-goer to explain what the priest does during a Byzantine rite, or ask a Maronite Catholic to explain a Four Square church ...)

What that means is that it will be difficult or darn challenging to find anime scenes or special effects which would be useful for presenting well-known Christian themes visually: what series and scene, for example, could you use to make a reference to (a) the Sermon on the Mount (b) Jesus calming the storm before Peter, (c) Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus (d) the suffering in the garden of Gethsamane, (e) Salvation or Judgement Day, etc.

Unless you're VERY good with a program like AfterEffects or Animation Master, video editors might have a hard time finding scenes which unmistakably point to Christian mysticism, and if you can't do that, it probably won't 'feel' like a Cristian AMV. (In counterpoint, if you OVER-do it, it would be TACKY.)

i didnt find it to hard to make christian music vids
theres actually alot of topics that can pertain to anime music vids.

Like i was saying the song "The Firebreathes" by Skillet I did it to Gohan turning Super Sayjin 2 (obviosuly from DBZ when I was a DBZ junkie) talks bout something living deep inside of you and releasing it
thats where I got the idea

there are some good christian bands out there that would make some freakin good movies:

Justified
Demon Hunter
38th Parallel
Blindside
12 Stones
Thousand Foot Krutch
Five Iron Frenzy

I hate Micheal W. Smith but i have a song i really like from him called "This is your Time". Talks about one of the girls who died in Colobine Shootings (well...the song is directed towards that theme) who said she belived in God and was shot.

I personally want to do this song with footage of Nicholas D. Wolfwood's serious side and his death scene from Trigun.

If ayone doesnt know who this is
Nicholas D. Wolfwood is a travelling priest who professes his faith and stuff but doesn tlive by it. He preaches the word yet he kills people. Quite irronic. I just thought that would be a cool music vid which a christian song.

It's not all in the official designation...

I say an AMV can be Christian whether it actually uses "Christian" music or not. I submit a few examples:

http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=24543
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=19821
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=15622

They're not exactly straight-out evangelism, but I like to think they do promote particularly Christian themes, such as: sex is for marriage and marriage is for sex, we should struggle against the powers and principalities of heretical societies that promote Humanistic utopianism, and life is meaningless without resurrection.

Trigun, I'm convinced, is what churches should show if they want to have a movie night featuring some anime. One of these days, when I find the song and the footage for it, I'll do a piece honoring the flawed-but-admirable Nicholas D. Wolfwood.

Silver_moon has done some good Christian rock AMVs. Check out:

Let It Make Me Strong (Trigun & Steven Curtis Chapman)
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... php?v=9460
In My Arms Again (Ah! My Goddess & Michael W. Smith)
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=10243
And, if you consider Evanescence Christinan, Resurrection (Ah! My Goddess Movie & Bring Me To Life)
http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=25231

I agree that there should be more Christian Rock AMVs, but I also agree it's hard to make one that actually works with anime. That's probably the reason there are so few really good ones.

Still, if someone did a good Newsboys AMV to Trigun, I'd be more than thrilled. :D
