Video Probs

Hey all. I'm kinda new to this video editting stuff and I've made a few crappy AMV's, but I'm working on it. Anyway, my problem is that my computer likes loading a lot when I put part of a video on the timeline. I use Windows Movie Maker 2 and have also tried Adobe Premiere 6.0,6.5,7.0. Anyway, my specs are below:

Dell Dimension 4400
Windows XP Home Edition
Penitum 4; 1.9 GHZ Processor
512 PC2700 DDR SDRAM
ATI Radeon 9200 Pro

I don't really know how to explain this well, but is there anyway to make my computer go any faster when trying to edit clips? In Premiere when I play the video it stutters a lot and you can hear my computer loading like crazy. I've tried defragmenting, cleaning up, even reformatting my drive. I have the latest drivers for everything and don't understand why my computer is acting this way. Maybe I need to disable Themes in Windows XP? Maybe I need to get a better video card, ram, what? ANY help at all is appreciated. I really wanna make a good AMV, but it doesn't look good for me...

Well my computer is half the computer yours is and mine does that too.But to be honest the only time i really have problems in premiere while editing is when i am using divx clips.I don't really know if that helps or not but i don't think its the computers problem that makes it do that.

Hmm... I've also treid .wmv video's and other stuff on other progs and stuff and my computer still loads likea mother. Guess I'll have to wait to get a new comp... :-\

Both of you need to Read <a href=http://www.a-m-v.org/guides/avtech31/>ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides</a> and learn the simple fact that EDITING WITH FOOTAGE OTHER THAN UNCOMPRESSED/HUFFYUV IS A NO-NO!!! I have an Athlon XP 1800+ (1.54ghz), 256 megs of ram and a 5400rpm 40gb hard drive, and I edit with no problem whatsoever using DVD footage.

If you wanna come back and say "oh thats too hard, I can't afford that etc etc" then you'll just have to put up with it being slow.

Not to chime in where I don't belong.

But if you want the fastest editing possible create huffy files, then go into virtual dub and downsize them all into 350 x 250's compress those into windows media mpeg plug V1 (making sure they all have the same file names as the originals), put them into seperate folders.

When you go to edit, load those up, then when you go to save, switch those files with the bigger better files.

That method has made it so I can make videos easily on my 550MHZ AMD K6'2.

If it's fast on my computer with no stutter... it's definitly gonna work on yours.

And, um, shouldn't it really be something closer to 3:2, like 352x240?

Urrgh... MSMPEG4 is baad... use the PicMJPEG codec set to really low quality, but don't change the frame size or it will affect the any motion settings you use in your final export. The Read <a href=http://www.a-m-v.org/guides/avtech31/>ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides</a> guides explain all that in explicit porn-star detail anyway, which you'd know if you read them.

Look i know how to export the footage to huffyuv but i only have a 6 gig HD for all of my crap i have to copmpress them in one way or another or i won't be making any videos period.
