Actually, the puppy scene with Heero didn't appear until Endless Waltz, so aside from Une, there really was no... Well, I can't think of the word, but I'm sure you get my drift. -_-'

That's what Zeta is for...sure, none of the cast of 0083 is featured (with the exceptions of Jamitov Heimann and Basque Ohm, and tech. they were featured in this series first) but it's where 0083 is leading as you see the Titans rise to power in the end of the OVA.

Still, it's an excellent series (although it'll help to see the original MSG first, as many of that shows characters return, chief amongst them Char, Amuro, and Bright.)
(and, in terms of blood-shed, 0083's got nothing on this baby, the Titans succeed in taking out several colonies during their time
and Tomino has a good-sized chunk of the main characters killed off in the final battle.
(If you were looking for the return of the 0083 cast in a new story, I wouldn't bank on that...their conflicts were all settled at the end of the series (or, they were killed) so there was really nothing left to go on (esp. after the 'Guess what kids? This event NEVER happened' twist)

However, if you still want to revisit it badly enough, there's always the compilation movie 'Last Blitz of Zeon' (or, as some call it 'Afterglow of Zeon') which features some new scenes (the catch is, you're gonna have to go HK if you wanna see this one)

As for Gato...yes, he died, in a morbidly amusing fashion (...
I'm sorry, but watching the 'Nightmare of Solomon' (personally, I still think Dozul deserved this title more...let's face it, with the Byg-Zam he racked up a pretty impressive body count) drive his uber-powerful mobile armor into the side of a nameless Salamis really struck me as pretty ironic...the creators build him up as this top-notch villain, then kill him in a way so random you'd expect to see it more likely happen to a rookie GM pilot...
Anyways...I'm rambling, so I'll close by saying

Wing's philosophy...it works well when you watch it, but when you look back on the characters it really doesn't quite measure up with the (the prime case of this being in the earlier eps as Wufei who speaks of fighting with honor proceeds to torch an entire barracks of sleeping soldiers...nice one Chang....)
The only one who ever manages to stick to their philosophical guns it seems is, ironically enough, the one character who takes the most flak from the fans, Relena (yeah, it may not have been the best philosophy out there, but she learned and adapted without flat-out breaking it.)

Anyways...

I don't know about Relena - she's one of the few characters in the show to do a complete 180 with her beliefs. If you go from her diehard 'complete pacifism' in the series to her 'peace can only be obtained through fighting' in the movie, she's either a hypocrite or she experienced some life changing event that made her completely change her ideals. That's definitely some sort of growth (or just a change so she isn't so annoyingly dense in the movie) - but I wouldn't say she 'stuck to her guns' - not when her movie character goes completely against everything she said in the series. :?

im one of those shitheads who was introduced to anime by DBZ and Gundam wing so i guess i have a bias. i always thought it was wicked cool, especially compared to Power Rangers and the other robot stuff on at the time.

I don't know... She was pretty iron cast on not fighting for peace in the movie(as far as I remember).

But then again she WAS Kidnapped, so she COULD be acting "OMG Do whatever just to save me! Heero I love you!"

I'll concede she did make a shift in the movies, but at the same time, this was openly admitted (several characters flip-flopped on their beliefs and said nothing of it...Relena openly renounced her former ways as being ineffective, so it's not exactly like she just abandoned it at the drop of a hat like so many others do, rather she came to realize that it wasn't working, and up until that point, she was one of the only characters in the series who seemed fully capable of practicing what she preached.

I don't think she was caving in, she was still holding her "I can be queen of the world because I have the power of conviction to back up what I say" attitude. No, when she stands there and says "look, we *have* to fight for peace, they're doing this for us, fighting is the only way, blagh-blagh" - she's definitely the same activist she was in the series. She's just saying exactly the opposite of what she preached for the entire 49 episodes. For those who decided to like her because she *does* practice what she preaches, it's even more annoying to see her suddenly say "Oh, you remember how I acted for 49 episodes, well, that was wrong - let's just pretend I never said that and follow me as I join the opposite side of the argument - pacifism is bad, fighting for peace is good."

As someone who groaned every single time she gave her "nothing can be accomplished through fighting" speaches, that movie speach "peace can only be obtained through fighting" just sealed my thoughts on her. I'd rather see her as a fanatic than a hypocrite.

Character growth - yes. Steady character - no. Her turn-around in beliefs was as extreme as Une's psycho versus sap character shifts.
