You could also force people to vote within a number of days after downloading a video. If they don't..

Hey Animal4890,

I'm sorry if I made you feel bad. That was not my intention. Nor was it my intention to discount or belittle your opinion. My intention was to inform anyone who reads this thread some of what the purpose of the star rating system and how it will be used. But, by your own admission, you basing your rating on "mood" rather than your impression of the video made me believe that you as an individual were not taking the rating system seriously.

As for your suggestion on how to fix the rating system, I'm not sure if by complicating things as you suggest would make things easier or more difficult as a whole for members. I do know that it would take a great deal more programming to complete than the current system.

Just out of curiosity, how often does your opinion of a video change before you come to a "final" opinion of it? How much is that opinion affected by time? Does your opinion change generally go up or down? If you originally thought a video was a 3, does it have any chance of moving to a 1 or a 5 after a few weeks? The more information I have about how other people think, the better I can come up with a system that works for most people.

Thanks again and have fun!! ^_^

Phade.

ah...let's just oppress the members more, that sounds like a good idea.

In response to Phade's last paragraph, I prefer not to rate an amv until I'm ready to rate it. So, I don't give it a rating even if I have seen it. This means my unrated amvs start to collect and eventually I am forced to watch one or more amvs and come to a final decision on them just to download more amvs that I would like.
If there was some way I could mark an amv I was unsure about then I'd give it a star rating right after I saw it and later on I could give it a final rating. Otherwise it'll be impossible for me to remember which are final and which are undecided.

Hey Animal4890,

An individual member can easily accomplish this by storing “unsure” rated videos in a different special folder on their hard drive separate from their usual video storage location. Once a decision has been made about the rating of that video, the video can be moved from that folder to the usual storage folder (or deleted). That should be an easy way to track which vids are new and which are done with.

Yep, I stick them in my 'Opinions' folder, and they *do* like to add up. ^_^; But it's much simpler than some code to keep them separate from 'graded keepers' - just keep them in their own folder till you've decided where they fit on the star scale. ^_^

Hey, I have a good idea. Let's not force people to give stars on "Local" downloads by taking down the free hosting and making people find/pay for their own hosting. That sounds like fun, and if we do that you (and all of the other poor proletariat) certainly wouldn't be oppressed anymore. In fact, I'm sure everyone we be quite joyous to be free of such oppression.

Everyone is given a free service for hosting AMV's (hosting which would otherwise be nigh impossible for many people) with a small stipulation that people give a quick (and simple) little pick on what they thought of the video after downloading it. You are getting videos off of the donut that you would otherwise not get at all, so how about you either shut your yapper and give some star ratings, or take the initiative to no longer be oppressed and not download anything off of the donut (since you probably wouldn't have been able to get it if the donut wasn't in place)

I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but it pisses me off when people complain about getting something for free.

I think, everyone should have started with a clean slate when this system came out. Why? Because currently, I log in after... who knows how long, and my last downloads were like 4 months or so ago... I don't even have the AMVs anyone to watch to even bother rating them, plus if I liked the AMVs, I would have left opinions, yet I don't have the AMVs on my computer for many reasons most likely. Re-downloading is a bit of a waste of time, especially for people who would be on 56k or thus.
