Dragonball Z has a great plot, and the their is no cheesy dialogue in the original version.. and i'm not even going to comment on the "kids show" crap..I believe everyone can enjoy Dragonball Z.. kids and ESPECIALLY adults. how isn't it mature? I don't agree with that at all.. Dragonball Z is a very intelligent show.. sure it's not Ghost In The Shell or Lain...but neither is Inuyasha or Ranma 1/2.. the characters all have strong backrounds, gain wisdom, learn to love, have families and strange relationships.. the plot all comes from the characters themselves, and that to me, is one strong storyline.
...if you want to see the true Dbz, get the japanese version...
(ok right from the top, is it "Begita" or "Vegita," I keep hearing different versions constantly. Are they different people? The anti-hero I saw was called Vegita. Is it perhaps Begita in the sub and Vegita in the dub?)
Well, it really wasnt a *bash per se. Just presenting my perspective of the issue, when I cited its flaws, I was citing popular conceptions among DBZ haters. As I said at the right time and place DBZ would have been my anime too. The fact that you and other people in this thread are handling this issue in a controlled and mature manner tells me that your not all a bunch of 12 year olds and you know what you're talking about to some respectable degree. It has honestly improved my perception of the show. However, I would like to respond to some of the things said just the same.
For a lot of people, dbz really DOES represent a gateway into anime, this is why so many proclaimed DBZ haters are somewhat tolerant of the show. I myself have 3 friends that have seen large portions of the show (2 of them were introduced into anime via DBZ, the 3rd was introduced via Ranma 1/2). The first has seen about 50 episodes. The second about 150. The Third the entire thing. Two of these Three have told me that it must be watched in Japanese, at least one of those two is a die hard fan for dubbed anime.
I'll be honest, I havent seen much of the show, and what I have seen has been out of order and dubbed. Thats why I'm withholding as much judgement as I can. I am willing to believe its funny in Japanese, because anime is funnier in Japanese a strong majority of the time (notable exeption, Golden Boy). I think its a little of base to compare DBZ to the likes of Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha, I mean hell you really can't even compare Ranma 1/2 TO Inuyasha in the first place.
An arguement could be made that Ranma 1/2 is an immature anime often (huge amounts of fanservice), and others can argue that Inuyasha's action and dialogue is pretty cheesy (its actually compared to DBZ by some in this regard). I tend to connect to anime on a purely emotional level, meaning my favorite animes are the ones with many highly developed characters that have interesting, unusual and, at times, completely unpredictable relationships. In other words, I could really care less about the action because I'm too busy worrying about what one character's is going to do to another. I'm not saying there isn't any character development in DBZ, I'm just saying I require more, because action is the focus instead of characters. I do like the more basic hand to hand combat in DBZ, it reminds me of some pretty cool fights in Ranma 1/2.
I just wish action was used more sparingly, and more work was put into establishing feelings for the characters, granted Goku came over from dragon ball, which if you watched that show means you already have some decent attachment.
Of course, its not like DBZ is the only anime to suffer this shortcoming, in fact its better than a lot of other animes in this dept. Namely Noir. It isnt until Chloe comes along in the 2nd half that you any reason to care except for Kirika. By the end, you wonder how good it might have been if you actually cared for the assasins victims or possibly other suplimental characters in the anime (the action is top notch, very acrobatic). Of course, most people quit this show before even finishing the first DVD.
Unfortunately, a lot of people judge animes completely early on, and give up on them before the anime really has a chance to get started. This is why it seems every one who hates DBZ has seen very little of the show, whereas everyone who has seen large portions of it finds it AT LEAST "acceptable." I understand that I among those who have seen little of the show, and I have tried to avoid attacking it (Why should I when all the DBZ haters already have), but just the same, I hope you understand where I am coming from, from what it sounds like, I think you will.
