If it weren't for filesharing, I'd still be listening to pop music. Filesharing has exposed me to many many MANY types of music I otherwise never would have heard. I haven't listened to the radio in months, I listen to mix-discs and regular CDs in the car. And bleeding for money has been really good for my music lust this semester . I get all my new music from friends (Web and real life) and from random P2Ping.
I do download. But I personally make it a practice to not download an entire album (general rule of thumb: no more than 5 maximum from any one album, although I have unintentionally violated this on a few points. ). However, for me, it's a personal choice, and I am not going to rub it in someone's face if I choose to buy the CD and they choose to bootleg it. I make my own decisions based off of my own personal ethics, and they make theirs. They're not bad people for it. May as well kick people in the groin for reading books in the aisle of a bookstore. People do it all the time, and it's just as much stealing as downloading. Strange how no one makes a big stink about, though.

"Personal" ethics? Ugh.
Reading a book in a book store is more like listening to streaming music. Not really comparable at all to illegally distributed mp3s.
Also: Coldplay and Radiohead are the Good. Even if Radiohead has been slowly deteriorating since OK Computer.

I think almost every issue is subjective, and I only say "almost" because I prefer to avoid blanket statements when I can.FoolThemAll wrote:Do you believe that it's only this particular issue that is morally muddled and subjective, or do you believe that there are no objective moral standards?
One person's view on a subject is going to be influenced by their personal beliefs and patterns of thinking, and no two people are going to think exactly alike with the possible exception of identical twins.
The world is morally muddled, and there is no one answer (damn blanket statements...). There is only the answer one chooses. Not everyone will agree with it, but that, again, is the nature of the world. I do not pretend to think that my answer is the best or only choice, or that other people must must must do things my way. It is just my choice, nothing more.

You have to draw a line somewhere with your moral uncertainty. Otherwise, you'll be uncertain that torturing babies for fun is immoral.
It seems quite clear to me that downloading unauthorized music through p2p programs and the like is immoral. I cannot imagine how it would not be immoral. You're taking the product of the work of many people without their permission, and without compensation. Past overcharging isn't a justification; you volunteered to be overcharged.
It may far from a damnable sin, but it's immoral nonetheless.
