I thought you said in another thread that you hadn't seen this yet? I could be wrong and you saw it recently, but how can you judge something if you haven't seen it yourself.Arigatomyna wrote:)
Eva (one of the most hyped anime, even those who hate the main character and have no idea what's gong on in half the series join the worshippers - brainwashing?)
As for what is over-rated and under-rated, I think someone already said it, but it's about expectations and what people say. If people say something is XYZ and it's below XYZ, then it's over-rated. The inverse is under-rated. At least that's what I define them as.
As for animes, I haven't seen enough lately to have a real opinion here. I'd also have to read and talk to fans to know what is highly recommended (to guage if it's over-rated).

And if we're talking in terms of expectations, I don't think there's very many titles that I'd call over-rated. That is, most shows either live up to what I hoped they would deliver or exceed my expectations.
In regards to Eva, it delivered pretty much as I hoped it would. Which in itself is pretty decent. I never expected it to be a God of Anime, and it wasn't, but it was an outstanding title that lived up to what I've heard from reasonable people that recommended it.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I don't need to see it to make the statements I made. I don't have to see Eva to know that out of 50 people in the Evansville anime club who had seen it only one person liked the main character. The rest hated the main character. Only three people had any idea what the story was about and they argued about it constantly so no one had any real clue. I don't have to see the series to say that even those who hate the main character and have no idea what's going on in half the series (47 out of 50 people in the group) still join the worshippers. To me, if that many people worship something for no good reason (when asked why they liked it - "because it's the greatest anime ever" - no concrete reasons). I don't have to watch the anime to know that is a 'hyped' anime. All I have to do is watch the worshippers who have nothing concrete to say besides "it's greeeaaat!"dwchang wrote:I thought you said in another thread that you hadn't seen this yet? [And I have watched some of the series - namely the last episodes. But when I decide if something is overrated, I"m looking a lot closer at 'fans' of the anime than I am at the anime itself. First I find out why they rate it and then I decide if they rated it too high - it's not a judgement on the anime alone, so I don't need to watch the entire anime to make that decision. Because as someone already said, 'overrated versus underrated is just a matter of opinon' - it's not a judgement passed down by some court that you have to argue with to keep your favorite anime from being condemned.]

It appears we have a different "definition" of the term "over-rated" and "under-rated." I just sifted through the rest of this thread and it looks like you defined that later.Arigatomyna wrote:I don't need to see it to make the statements I made. Regardless, I still think you should watch the entire thing. The last episodes in particular can be quite confusing without any prior knowledge.
At the same time, I can easily see how Eva is regarded as Over-rated since I agree to a degree. You're (unfortunately) quite correct in your observations about most fans of it.

Just keep in mind that I never insulted the anime itself. ^.~ My comments were on the fans of it - the ones who do the things I listed in my early post. I have nothing against the anime.dwchang wrote:At the same time, I can easily see how Eva is regarded as Over-rated since I agree to a degree. Arigato, you know a whole bunch of stupid aparently people, this means nothing. It's naive to judge a series, or anything about the series, by the general opinion of a particular group. I hear stories about these kind of people, I've never met a one myself, but since it seems such people exist, that's quite a huge pity. But maybe you just got your hands on a sour bach of human souls to work from.

I will continue to pimp these two, which IMHO are underrecognised. Pretty much everyone I've met that's actually seen these has like them a lot.
Princess Tutu and Narutaru. The former is possessed of a story in the finest tradition of fairy tales, an excellent classical score and heart-wrenching emotional scenes. If you aren't getting into this at the start, that's understandable as it's a slow starter, but eps 7 onwards are very, very good stuff. Episode 13 (it's a 26er split into two 13-ep 'chapters'), 'Swan Lake', is wonderful in every way.
The latter I have already tried my hardest to get people to see. It is blessed with a source manga of genius, and a plot orders of magnitude better than the vast majority of anime, or indeed anything else, out there. Darkly violent, gripping and tense; unfortunately another slow starter.
