Getting the family into anime
One year ago, my Dad woulden't let me subscribe to Shonen Jump, wouldent let me rent half of the anime movies I wanted, and besides making fun the whole time, would just say no to anime. The rest of my family (Besides my younger brother) had the same view point.
Then Metropolis came out, the only way I was alowed to get that was I had a freind over who wanted to see it (I had only been waiting six months for that movie). Well, didn't I show that one to the family, and my Mom began to except anime.
Then my Dad made a Family movie night, and by this time my younger sister was into anime. So I rented Millennium actress, and by the end, every one was crying. Now I got my older sister hooked, and she looked all over town for the movie (and as DJ Izumi would know, she never found it in moncton). When it came my turn again to choose a movie, I picked grave of the fire flies, and now, my whole family is hooked.
So, did you ever get your family into anime? Whats your story?

I managed to get my Dad into anime years ago. Back then, DBZ aired during the dinner hour, and we used to watch it together. I don't think he was all that into it, but it was a stepping stone. Shortly later I bought the first Trigun DVD. After I sat through it on my own, I took it to him and said "this is so much better!" In time we sat through the entire series together, and that got him hooked.
Since then, we've watched Ghost in the Shell, Armitage III, NGE, Boogiepop Phantom, and Hellsing together. Plus, I know for a fact that he went and saw Spirited Away, and the Cowboy Bebop movie when they were in theaters. I also got him a few volumes of the Lone Wolf and Cub manga for his birthday (he loves the movies), and I think he might be starting to get into manga too.
When I head down for x-mas break, I might show my Mom Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke to see if she likes them.

I've sorta gotten my dad into a little bit of anime. The first thing he really watched was Cowboy Bebop. After seeing that he now have a favorite anime character, Faye. He even had a Faye desktop on his computer for a while. When I put in the movie to watch, he was in the living room trying to get me to go outside and help it. After an hour I turned off the movie and he got mad about it. XD I had to tell him to focus and get his work done before watching a movie.
Next was Trigun. He gets a kick out of Vash and even helped me make a replica of his gun for my costume. He also thinks Meryl is cute.
Then he offered to take my sister and I to a convention in Toronto. We almost got him to go as Wolfwood, but he decided to go to a casino instead. XD
Other than Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, my dad has watched some of Fruits Basket, some of Inu Yasha, some of Escaflowne, and some of Chobits. He wasn't really entertained by what he saw of Princess Monoke, but that's because my parents came in during the last half hour so it made no sense.
As for my mom, she's been an unsuccessful attempt. She sees it on tv and changes the channel on us. However, I think she did like Grave of the Fireflies considering she always falls asleep when watching movies late at night, but she didn't for that. Her first view of anime was the Urd episode of Oh! My Goddess. So her preconceptions about anime are all the same. Then the next time she sat down and watched while we were watching anime was during Full Metal Panic! and there was a conviently random upskirt shot of Chidori.
So my dad likes Faye and my mom thinks anime is porn. That's my anime in the family experience.

working on it
Originally, my family thought anime was pretty ridiculous...my brother watches a bit, and he's a big Rurouni Kenshin fan, but I'm the only real anime-freak. One of my best friends is also into anime, so we're working on getting as many of the rest of our crowd hooked as possible. There are some promising candidates!

My parents aren't into anime, but my dad was understanding and nice enough to take us all (and Cyanna) to Otakon 2003.
My younger brother (14), <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... Studios, is about as much of an anime fan as I (though without the AMV-making), starting at around the same time, though I don't think he's seen as much as I have. His first con was Shoujocon 2002, a year before the rest of us got ours.
My younger sister (12) can draw a pretty darn good Yukino Miyazawa and Yami Yugi (as well as other things in manga style), and she's big on at least the CardCaptor Sakura manga (and Love Hina, though I'll never know why). But besides what they show on Cartoon Network, I don't think she's seen any anime.
And I found out over Thanksgiving break that my younger younger brother (7) just got his first manga, a volume of Clamp School Detectives.
And what's odd about it is that I had nothing to do with any of this otakunization. Well, except that I sent my brother fansubs and AMVs from college...

here's how my family relates to anime. firstly, im an only child, so i aint got no siblings. ok so i slowly get older, slowly start needing more and more money, my perants give me it, my perants think that i gota spend at elast $20 when i go to a freinds house, and about $40-50 when i go ou tto the movies (usualy i get a bit extra when i say im going to the city), and random other places like school and shit. so basicaly i save up all the money i dont end up spending and buy anime dvd's with my perants hard earned money. actualy, currently ive got about $600 worth of anime dvd's in my room and my perants know nothing about it.

As far as my family goes, my dad has been exposed to anime for about 6 years, and he still thinks "its an utter waste of time."
That being said, he is tolerant of it, and I think its just not his thing. Same with my mom. If anything I'd say its a generation thing. My parents are in their 50's and they grew up in the pristine and puritanical 1950's and early 60's. IMO, its just a simple generation difference. I don't like 50's or 60's music, and they love it. They can't stand any of my music. I have one sibling, a younger brother who is turning 18 soon, (I'm 22). Every anime I have seen that was good I showed to my brother, and he is comparably enthusiastic about anime. I have long accepted that My dad will never see anime the way I see it, and my mom just wants everyone to get along, she wouldnt have an opinion unless it was absolutely neccessary. I have even accepted that my brother will never quite be as passionate about anime as me, but I'm happy just the same that he enjoys it.
How can we expect our parents to like something when it goes against 40-50 years of societal and cultural influences and rules, rules such as "cartoons are for kids." I understand this and am willing to move on.
I can only hope that many of us here will go on to have families and raise kids. At that time we can share anime with them (when their old enough) and hope they dont think its some dorky old timer thing (wouldnt that be ironic?). I hope that if my kids like some kind of new entertainment, I wont be so set in my ways to think its a bad activity or a waste of time. But being a parent kind of makes us protective and extra cautious, so who knows.
