I started watching anime, thed discovered that my dad liked Alakazam the Great. He despises new anime with a passion, but likes the drawning style of Metropolis, liked the Story in Grave of the Fire Flies, and bought Totoro for my little brothers and sisters. He pseudo likes it, but I'm not going to try showing him Berserk or Evangelion just yet.

My parents don't appreciate it, the whole concept of animation does nothing for them even though I know they'd like things like the Cowboy Bebop Movie. But meh.

My brother watches some anime, mostly stuff like Ninja Scroll, Perfect Blue etc. (Though I have him interested in Chobits,....he actually even read some of my manga  ...not a natural occurance)

Basically I have fun converting my friends....And I do it soo well....

My parents can't stand it. My mother is the most vocal about it. Usually, my father, like my grandparents, just falls asleep within five minutes through a film they're not interested in. But my mother is just annoyed.

She thinks Eva is porn, and then she saw GTO. Now she thinks the DVD player is forever unclean. Whenever I mention anime of any kind, her eyes immediately glaze over, and she tries to walk away. Of course, she does the same thing whenever I talk guns or automotive tech. My sister just tried to get her to sit through an episode of Samurai Jack. All my mother could say is that it's "Crappy art-deco", and the whole show is based on false mysticism. My parents even complained about Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I admit the mythology behind that movie is nonsense, but I can still sit through it, because it's a good movie.

My father refuses to buy or watch films with Tom Cruise, now that he's come out of the closet. All he can say is "the guy's a faggot." I have to agree, but I still made them sit through Minority Report, which they managed to digest. Raymond Burr was homosexual, but my mother can watch the four hours of Perry Mason reruns that play daily. I still support Social Darwinism and hard-core right wing policy (minus religion), but even I can agree a good movie is a good movie.

After months of debate, my mother broke down and bought Pirates of the Carribean. My father refused to give money to Johnny Depp, after he bashed America from the safety of France. I won't forgive Depp for that, but he still was a good Jack Sparrow (ahem, that's CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow!).

My family is the only one that chooses it's films and television by politics. To an extent, I agree with them. We haven't watched ABC for the last year and a half, maybe every once in a while flipping to the local news broadcast on that channel, because King of the Hill isn't on. Even then, it's too much politically-correct propaganda to swallow. The producers on that show must be thinking "Gee, let's show our handicapped anchor from the waist up, because we have to make everyone accept the less fortunate, regardless of her qualifications."

Yes, this rant has gone too far off topic. But to understand my family's grudge against anime (which my gamer sister even agrees to), you have to understand our politics.

My mother pitched a hissy fit while I was watching Kenshin in the living room...it was the episode where Megumi is talking about killing herself. My mother starts screeching about how cartoons aren't supposed to talk about suicide. I don't think that in itself bothered her as much as the fact that my 4-year old sister wandered into the room and was having the time of her life watching it with me. ::snickers evilly:: She saw my anime pin collection and asked me to get her a Kenshin...I know what I'm getting HER for Christmas...not that mommy dearest would be pleased.... Totoro was my first anime when I was little. My grandparents rented it for me not knowing what it was, really. That's what set it all off.

Our local Rodgers Video store has something against anime (it's rates it all R), and my father has something against R rated films (Something about violence, sex, profanity and how it effects "little kids" like me). But tonight I got him to rent the first .hack//sign DVD (I know, R? Who would rate that R?), regaurdless of the 18A sticker slapped on top of the 13 up box rating. A few of my family members will watch it, but the point is, he went agaisnt the grain so I could get this DVD (even though I have had the fan sub for like, six months now).

my parents are ok with it. We were on vacation and I made them watch a Cartoon Network version of Rurouni Kenshin. I explained the entire storyline. My dad liked it (it was the episode where Saitou faces Usui and kills him) while my mother didnt understand it. Later on in the weekend, they wacthed Princess Monokee with me. They enjoyed it very much and my mother was very surprised it was that good and same with my dad (My mom didnt like the bloody parts). I also had them sit through the DBZ episode of Vageta's death during the Buu series. They also sat through one of Trigun's episodes where Wolfwood dies and they thought that was very emotional.

My dad doesn't mind it but my mom thinks anime is pointless but doesn't care if I watch it. heck, I'll be watching Samraui X and she'll come into the room and it might be a bloody part. She watches it looks at me and says am I enjoying myself? She also came in when Kenshin and Tomoe was sharing thier "intimate" moment.

I also show my parents occassionally music vids (i show them all I make) and they really like them. My dad saw half of Samurai X Trust and Betryal and thought it was too bloody.

So my family dont care if I like it and like my drawings, etc. Plus they know the idfference between anime and hentai so they know all anime aint like that.

My sister is a lesser otaku (she's 12). She's very big into Kenshin (not as big as me). She's afraid her friends will make fun of her. She's watched Princess Monokee and Spirited Away. Sadly, she watches pokemon so Im trying to introduce her to some new stuff then that.

None of my coisons like anime, some hate it. You see, I go to school with everyone of my coisons basically and they're all either popular or jocks or quarterbacks on the football team. My coison Matt who is my age and we're very good friends watched Samurai X and liked it.

I have a few friends who are into anime but most dont like it or care bout it. One thinks all anime is evil (and anything secular on that part....). When my now formal best best friend stopped hanging out with me for a girl, he stopped watching anime cause his girlfriend didnt like it. My new friends are big anime freaks.

One of my new freinds was just broken into anime and loves Trigun and Naruto.

My friend thinks Im obsessed with anime (no duh!) and thinks all anime is 18 and up cause on Samurai X, it says 18+

Sucks to be you Tagarth. I've been watching R rated movies since I was 10. My parents didn't mind it as long as there wasn't too much sex in it. Now they could care less.

I have a friend who's scottish, and his family is... weird.

They care absolutely nothing for violence of any sort, but they go berserk over any tiny sexual suggestion.

Sucks to be him since he's been obsessed with Love Hina

i got my little sister into anime, she got me Chobits cause i asked and then she saw it and loved it so now she watchs rurouni kenshin, chobits, and trigun. But, she isnt a major fan like i am i also got her into musicvideos. The rest of family is anime racist i guess. They hate it totaly one brother will like yell if anime is on when he is in room, and mom doesnt really give a damn, dad thinks i have lame hobbys, and my sister is a bit into it, and my other brother well hes an ass... :) but i like having unique hobbys, i hate when family loves what i love which is why i try and be unique, and almost all of my friends love animes:cowboy bebop, trigun, love hina, berserk, magic knight rayearth, ghost in the shell, chobits.Well guess what i got 90% of my friends into anime, except for marc, jackie, ricky, and shaine the rest of em i got them into, jackie(girl) can draw anime so good, shes so cool... :) and hot...and rick loves berserk and ghost in the shell hes a party animal.but the rest just like animes and i got em into it, also inuyasha they love inuyasha... :x damn my hobbys though i love em..
