It's the end of the world, as we know it...

And I don't feel fine. :/

http://www.divx.com/hardware/detail.php ... %3Fid%3D55

A fully compliant and standarized Divx and Xvid playing DVD player. I'm sure there are people out there who have seen this, it's probabbly old news, oh well. It's an interesting video discussion point.

Personally, I think this marks a new level of hell for the MPAA. No longer are your movies to be bootlegged across the internet and watched on computers, oh no... Now Joe and Jill Kazaa can hop online, download a movie, pop it onto a CD (And get snacks while it's burning) and watch the newest blockbuster movies a week after they hit theaters on the comfort of their own couch.

I can honestly see the MPAA throwing a fit over this, rightfully so. I can't see any REALISTIC extensive reason as to a legal purpose for home divx and xvid viewing. Burn your fansubs to CD and enjoy, movies, the works... Jeez...

I want one. ;_;

DivX isn't just for pirating movies, you know.

I am aware of that of course. It is one of the primary tasks of Divx however.

I'm interested in what sort of hardware specs the machine has in comparison to a common, mid-range DVD player. I know the CPU would have to be signifigantly more powerfull not to mention more flexable. Intreaguing.

But the real question is why would I spend $300 on that when I could get a perfectly good XboX for $179.99 new. Possibly cheaper off ebay, that is easily modded. Can do all that and more... Yar...

XboX all the way...

Yes it is old news... but the coolest thing about it is that it's firmware is upgradable :o

If a new codec comes out it can get added to the playback capabilities of the player through updates.

Here's one that you can take with you to a con: Panasonic LV65 Portable DVD Player.
The hitch is that the MPEG4 files must be on an SD card, not the DVD.

This also plays MPEG4 files: RCA Lyra RD2780.

Also, the Archos players: Archos.com.

The KISS player has also played DivX files for quite a while, if I recall correctly.

But seeing more players do this is encouraging. The fewer players that play WMV files the better.

I've had the Kiss player for about a year now.

There are newer players that do the job better though.

I see they have Divx 3 working now. What I have to wonder about are the Bitrates it can handle. Wasn't it in the 3 to 4 K range max? And on top of that, are there any MPEG-4 DVD's out there? because I'm not going to buy an MPEG-4 DVD player just so I can watch a reencoded MPEG-2 movie.
