Far better than a modded XBox is a simple old HTPC with a TV out, or hooked up to a digital display (like an HDTV or projector). Even better is if you get one of the Microsoft Media Center computers, they're great for what they're supposed to do, although rediculously pricey. But a full fledged PVR, DVD player, and movie playback machine, with a remote and everything, all in one box is pretty attractive.

I know someone who works for Microsoft and I can actually obtain the MCE installation software (normally only OEMs can get it) so I may try building my own box at some point to run MCE cause it's a really nifty piece of software.

Well yes. A data projector on your machine is a much better solution.

And I've been meaning to build a machine for the sole purpose of playing video via TV/out. I call it the "DivXboX" once I find an empty case and some more cash I'll get started on it. *googles* Although now that I think about it, I'm sure there are places that have a few already assembled. Maybe worth a look.

Just put this computer together off price watch:

No keyboard/mouse or OS. But ya know... Ummm Those are like $10ea. I wish there was a good remote control system...

$20 linkworld case
$24 300watt Sparkle power
$52 nforce2 mobo
$15 128MB DDR 2100 ram
$31 Duron 1.2Ghz
$11 Savage S3 video w/ TV-OUT
$33 20GB hard drive
----------------
$186

That includes shipping!! ;o

I checked how much an Xbox shipped costs... $186 my friend... The nForce2 has onboard sound and LAN. So that's taken care of there. More hard drive space and cpu power for about the same price. Not badd.. badd indeed. Hell you could install linux and use one of it's media players.

Sweet deal, I should make them and over charge to people here locally... <_< >_>

Most DVD players are incapable of real, text based overlays, the icons, subtitles, everything else on most all DVD players are just comprised of Bitmaps where-as Matroska and OGM use true text based subtitles
matroska can contain vobsub subtitles also, like in DVDs. But its true, SRT can be supported on standalones, while SSA/ASS are very hard, if not impossible to support. Thats why we make USF also .....
Support the future of video and audio encoding : matroska as container, USF as subtitles standard and CoreAPI as codec interface API in future

There is a DviX player for Dreamcast. I just need to find it again. But then I could watch all my fansubs and movies without using TMPG to make VCDs. Then again, the Dreamcast DviX player problably skips alot of frames and stuff... And yeah I'm the only person that still loves his Dreamcast and plays it often.
