A thread about "Who is your favourite anime villian" could inspire an amv on that theme for all I know. Given the permission to just remove thread "because I think they are dumb" could be open to abuse. Generally moderation happens through rules.
The way we used to decide if something was OT, WOT or AAM was this: If the thread was a discussion (Do you think this, what do you think about that...) then it was OT, if it wasn't something to discuss (Here's a funny pic, this dog is a homo) then it was WOT, if it was self-centred (check out my website, why do I pee green) then it was AAM.
I guess what could be done is to say that General Anime is for discussion, not for polls and hence remove the "favourite" and "which is best/worst/etc" threads... if that's what people want then that can easily become a rule but I for one would like to hear other people's views on this issue.
So, should General Anime have all "what/who is your fave" and "what/who is the best" threads removed?
Know how Ot and that Sticky for what was Ot and WOT? Put one in GA. It should say something like:
Sticky wrote:This forum is for the general discussion of anime. It however, is NOT for the discussions of hypothetical situations.
This means no threads about who would win in a fight (Even I outgrew making those) This means no threads about what superpower you would have, who you would set on fire if you could, who you would stabe in the face, have a sex orgy with, or eat.
See, there is a subtle distinction between polls and the "hypothetical situation" thread. Polls ask things like what your favorite anime are, animation style, what cool new animes you've seen, things semi-productive.
Hypothetical situations threads have no basis IRL, and ask things like the given examples. And the productive hypothetical situations that can be productive for discussion could easily be reworded to something else.
Example: If you were in charge of a studio, what type of things would you change about it to make it better?
Changed: What would you like to see changed about anime?
This is just an example, but the point is that the powers that be NEED to set some guidelines and structure, and then enforce it. Had that been done the OT forums would still be here and we wouldn't be complaining about GA. But if GA goes the way of OT then I'll kiss it goodbye before I dance on it's grave. It'll just be another victory for the spammers when it gets locked.
So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab
