A little history lesson:

WHAT IS YAOI?
Specifically, yaoi stands for "yama-nashi, ochi-nashi, imi-nashi". In English, it means 'no peak, no point, no meaning'.

Well, the word refers to scenarios in which lovers of anime and manga put together same-sex (male, to be exact) characters in a romantic situation. Some of these yaoi situations are depicted in doujinshi (visual manga / fan art by fans of the manga or anime). Most of the time though, fans write fics or stories of their favorite male characters coming together romantically.

HISTORY
For anyone who requires more historical information, go get this book (look below). How did the idea of homosexuality arrive in Japan? Where did it start? How did it become a form of lifestyle? Reading this book will give you a broader context of homosexuality in ancient Japan.

Male Colors: The Construction of Homosexuality in Tokugawa Japan by Gary P.Leupp
(^book mentioned, below is the first paragraph)

"It is no secret to any careful student of Japanese society in the Tokugawa period (1603-1868) that during these two and a half centuries male homosexual behavior was extremely common, at least in towns and cities. Sex between males was not only widely tolerated among the articulate classes but positively celebrated in popular art and literature. Homosexual behavior was formally organized in such institutions as samurai mansions, Buddhist monasteries, and male brothels linked to the Kabuki Theater. It was, indeed, a salient feature of mainstream culture."

(I did a little googling and that's what I found, you could probably go more in depth if you do a little searching, but I don't know if you'll find a concrete answer)

Heh, truly amusing, isn't it? ;p

Nice bit of history lesson there, Moonlight! I might have to check that book out sometime. It's interesting to learn more about the origin of that genre. ^.~

Naw, we just co-opted it. It's fanservice for girls. Most of the guys are pretty femmy, and act more like a woman would than a guy.

I'm surprised there's actually a book on it!!! Talk about surprising.

A strange question, but it's good to see that there was a serious answer for it.
