Meri and I did "<I>The Professional</I>," "<I>Smoke</I>," and "<I>Alone in the World</I>" all with straight AVS editing on a 1.5 ghz, 128 MB RAM machine. And yes, each of those videos had their entire respective series ripped and used during editing.
So yes, it *CAN* be done... it can just be very, very, very painful ^^;; I highly suggest going with the MJPEG / switch routine. It's just so much faster editing... depending on your machine, I suppose. I can only imagine that it's STILL the faster way to go, even all all your super-machines! *shakes fist*

My 1.54 ghz athlon can handle it, no sweat. The thing is, our systems probly have wildly different hardware, not counting the aforementioned processor.NicholasDWolfwood wrote:Halfway decent being 2Ghz or more? My 1.4Ghz Athlon can't handle editing the vobs directly. I don't think even a P4 3.06Ghz can really handle editing more than 4 avs files directly.
Using my 40gb 5400 rpm hard drive, my 1.54 ghz athlon and 256 mbs of ram, I was able to edit really easily about 6 - 8 avs files at a time. Now that I have 768mb of ram and a 120gb 7200rpm hard drive, well... you get the picture.
Anyway, like I said, it really comes down to exactly how your system is configured.
