Well... some people will spell syllabic "n" as "m" if it's followed by a "b" or "p" - as in the word that's spelled "sempai" or "senpai" depending on the system you follow. But you're right, even if someone follows a rule that would spell it "sempai", that wouldn't allow them to put the "m" at the end of a word.

Go look at http://www.fujitv.co.jp/jp/b_hp/hellsing/, which seems to be an official site for the Japanese show. The Japanese spelling of the name used there is apparently ????? (Damn, looks like PHPbb won't let me post in Japanese. Who'd ever want to do that, this is only a Web site ABOUT JAPANESE ANIMATION DAMMIT!). Well, go look at the end of the third paragraph of text on that page, which ends in a reference to "the vampire Alucard".

You will see that his name is spelled as the katakana for A-(long vowel)-KA-(long vowel)-DO. The romaji would be "Aakaado". So if you want to be really "correct", that's how you have to spell it! However, the Pioneer English-language official site spells it "Arucard" - that isn't valid romaji, but it's probably the English spelling that best aproximates the way the name actually sounds in Japanese - and we've already beaten to death the reasons why "Alucard" makes sense as an English spelling.

There probably isn't much more that can usefully be said on this thread...

Ill just stick with Alucard, as long as u kno he is a vampire and his name spelled backwards is Dracula, thats wat i think is the main point of his man. If you wanted to be really correct, the Romanji of it would be Aakaado. And for the record, the Japanese language does not have an L OR an R in it, what it has is a whole different sound that kind of sounds like L and R combined. It's neither, and both are acceptable ways of translating it. From my standpoint, Alucard is more correct than Arucard because you have to take the writer's intentions into view. I don't think he threw those letters together randomly, it's pretty clear that his name is supposed to be, indeed, Dracula spelled backwards. However, the translation Arucard, while not nearly as cool sounding and clearly not the writer's intent, is nonetheless still an accurate translation.

Something else to remember is that the show is set in Britain; we can reasonably assume that all the major characters are "really" (for some value of reality) speaking and named in the Queen's English, and the Japanese dialogue and names that we hear in the anime, are a translation of that. "Alucard" is almost certainly the original English-language name that Aakaado is an approximation of.

Why the hell are they spelling it "Aakaado" on that site when they say it "Arukaado" in the animé? I don't get this at all.

..., why so many spelling of one name. Why dont they just make up their mind and just name the guy and keep it that way, dont spell it differently, arg. Oh the confusion ...
