Why are dubs automatically given the shaft? (mini-rant)

Unless they say english words in the original version - I cracked up at how they had english pronounced in YnM. But I like when they use english names for their attacks in some 'action' anime, just depends on the va and the words...

Yeah, you're right. I like to hear english spoken with a Japanese accent (by my favorite seiyuu atleast)

(And... I'm sure some of you would condemn me for this, but I ilove the way Bejiita says his Big Bang Attack.)

No condemnation. I love his Japanese voice actor, very subdued yet 'powerful' without screaming all the time. The opposite of the English.

Actaully, I would perferr the dubbed verison of an anime. Well, most of the time. ^^;; Since I don't know Japanese, I couldn't watch an anime in its original language without subtitles. And reading subtitles takes away from watching the anime itself. Now, some dubs are pretty bad. But as anime grows even MORE popular and more of it is brought to the US, companies are getting much better with the dubbing. Cowboy Bebop is one of best dubbings I've seen, I think.

As for changing sentences and lines, some things HAVE to change in order for the English words to match the movement of the character's lips. I'd rather have a stupid sentence then one that didn't match the lip movement.

Still, I do enjoy watching the Japanese vocied one occsionally.

Yeah... that's another thing: I'm more likely to be tolerant of dubs if they pronounce their words properly, and, conversely, less likely to enjoy a dub with mispronounced words. Example of the latter: in Inu Yasha, the main character's name is pronounced KAgome, not KaGOme like the dubs have it. And it's MIroku, not MiROku. And NAraku, not NaRAku. And for some reason (this may just be due to the fact that the fansubs use an "R") it bugs me when Kirara is pronounced Kilala--yes, I know that Japanese people use the same sound for Ls and Rs, but... I dunno... I always hear more of an "R" sound...

*shrug* I'm picky on names in general though... I try to always use the name that a person prefers and say it how they prefer it. So it's not surprising that I'd hold the same true in Anime. (Which is part of the reason why I refuse to watch the Shaman King dub--they just plain changed some of the names).

All I have to say is that the hellsing and slayers dubs walk all over the crappy japanese versions. Now Love Hina is the dub from hell.

Most people prefer it the other way around. Have you ever looked at the lip sync in "The Critic"? It's horrible...

As a rule, I'll generally try any dub once, for the sake of comparison...for the most part, they really aren't that bad...sure, the originals generally do sound better, but on their own, most dubs are pretty decent (the only dubs I've seen I could truly call bad being Dragonball GT, Aura Battler Dunbine (...coming from ADV, this one felt like a first-time dub...then again, it was also overseen by the same man who brought us Robotech so...), and Getter Robo: Armageddon (it was decent, but it was the little mistakes...repeatedly confusing Getters II and III, the pilots' less-than-enthusiastic battle cries...man...super robot just doesn't dub well...period)
