How key is the music?

I downloaded a bunch of AMV's recently that all had music I personally didn't care for. But they went so well with the mood and the message that they were attempting to convey that I still watched them, and again, it opened my eyes to different avenues. An example of this is Euphoria, by what's-his-bucket. madkoopiseva. (???) Damn good vid. didn't particularly like the music, totally different world.

I can think of instances where either the anime was made better by the music or vice versa.
I enjoy a lot of music without video (over 500 CDs in my collection so far) but a well edited video can make even a mediochre song stand out.
The best AMVs have that perfect balance of great music and great editing. These are the videos that I watch over and over and over again (sheesh... I'm trying to sound like an authority even though I've seen less than 20 AMVs so far... stoopid dial up connection...).

suggestion: when you find a good AMV, check out that person's top fav AMVs, usually good editors like good AMVs, but there are always exceptions of course.

Im gonna have to say that the music is ridiculously crucial to the video. it just sets the floor for what you're going to work on. True a good song can be ruined by poor editing, but thats just the editors fault. wether its lack of experience, skill, talent, creativity, vision, or a combination of all of those factors. I personally feel that without a good engine (the music) the video can't generate the driving force. or calming mood that it should. I have also thrown away dozens of rough drafts with great edits on them after realizing how bad the music choice is. There has to be a good blend of all of the elements to make an outstanding music video.
oh and just to put my word in on the whole genre thing. (rap AMV's should usually just be kept as a "hey wouldn't it be cool if" and stop right there...unless of course its a comedy I've seen way too many bad rap AMVs)

Music, as has been said, sets the mood. If you can get relevance in there too (like the video with Kenshin set to Hero from the Spider-Man soundtrack) then all the better. Things like Trigun are a mixed bag, because you can have nineties alternative rock (for the serious parts) or Weird Al Yankovic (for the comedy parts) and depending on which kind of AMV you want, it's affected by the music.
Like if they did a Sailor Moon video with a Porno soundtrack, it'd be hilarious, and obviously not taken seriously.
Bwa ha ha. The very concept drives me to insanity.

You know what? I don't even care anymore.
