That makes sense...I never quite understood how doujinshi artists could get away with it in Japan.... Scanlation projects seem hard to come by. I haven't seen one in...well, ever, though I know there are a few in the works.

That's what was so great about YYH djs in English - they had circles they did scanlations for. And they actually made attempts to contact the dj artists *before* scanlating. At least for Tide (Souno), Arina, Maya, Fuji, Towa, and a number of others that I have - they had the permission and thanks of the original artists for making those djs readable for English speakers. Why?

Because djs you buy on ebay give no money to the creators. I know, people say to buy them instead of getting scans, but second-hand books do not give money to the artists. If I buy a dj directly from an artist and then sell it on ebay, I am not going to pay a percentage to the artist who made it - I already paid her. I keep the money I make from selling the used dj. Books bought second-hand are as 'free' as scans - the artists get nothing but promotion - more people know about them. But they cannot make more books because more people want them. There is a limit to the number of djs an artist can sell - after that, they cannot sell more whether people want copies or not. So you need scans and you have to search for used books.

The artists published in YYH djs in English didn't mind the scanlations because they wouldn't get more money whether people bought used copies of the books or just downloaded the scans. They had already sold their limit (enough to make up the amount spent on supplies). After that, they just wanted their work to be seen. Doujinshi scanlations do that, so the artists don't mind.

It's the difference between illegal manga scanlations - djs are fanworks, so the rules are different. They've already made as much money as they can on the work - the only thing left is enjoying the flattery of the obsessed fans. ^_^ Rather like fanfiction writers.

I know I loved having some of my fics translated to Spanish a few years back - I wasn't making anything from it, the perosn asked permission first, so it was a great bit of flattery. I wish more scanlators would abandon manga (at least ones they know will get translated eventually) and do more djs. It's one of the reasons I miss that site so much - aestheticism really kicked a mess load of fans in the face with their deletion of it.

I see nothing wrong with yaio. I see nothing wrong with guys in genral. Personaly I like yaio but understand why some guys dont like it. Or they could just be afrid of their own sexuality???

No, they rationalize their dislikes by proving them 'wrong' or 'evil' in their minds - that way they have an excuse to dislike them. Then they go out of their way to force their opinions on others - because they have convinced themselves they are 'right' and 'good' to believe what they do. But that's neither here nor there.

I have lots of djs, but since I have more YYH than any other (RK, GW, and FF7 coming in next), I'll go back to that.

I mentioned how dj artists do ukes, and in particular Hiei - I'll give a little visual aid for this. Don't worry, I'm just talking about how they do the characters - namely their faces. Nothing 'naughty'. ^.~

Arina Toshimi - my favorite YYH artist
Hiei:

Kurama:

An 'effeminate' crossdressing Kurama - note this to compare to the 'uke' Kurama done by others - I still find it less feminine despite the dress because of the way Arina draws his face:
Image
A close up of that same Kurama - note that he looks like Youko Kurama - dress or not, it isn't more effeminate than the anime:

And the others...

Fuji Shinichi tends to do the 'young Hiei' - not quite shota, but very close - it's the eyes:
Image
Yet Fuji also draws him strikingly well - this pic is depicting a version of the scene in the anime where Hiei is in Mukuro's healing tank and still looks 'young' but not too far from character:
Image

Towa is one of the borderline shota-ish artists - Hiei looks like he's 9 at the oldest:
Image
Yet Kurama (as seme) remains close to normal:

And the infamous 'Kurama-uke' - looks very little like him, completely female. I won't even post what they draw Hiei looking like since he's downright ugly and misshapen in the face:
Image
This one is an AU dj, but it's *supposed* to be a slutty uke Kurama...I can see it a bit, but not very close to him at all:

I have others, but these give some variety - it's no wonder Arina is my favorite. I just wish her version of Kurama was a little nicer. ^_^;;

I'd like to know why every character in Yaoi has to be so damned girly. :\

Heh... it's sort of true. Out of context, I would've easily mistaken half those pictures for those of girls.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Heh, I want them both for variety. But if I could only have one, I'd go for spicy and dangerous - Youko and Hiei - pure demon and long lifespan. I like ningen Kurama for his compassion, but I think he'd still have that even if he did revert to Youko fulltime. You build a hear that can love, you don't undo that very quickly - especially in anime. ;p

But yeah, as a fangirl I'd want youko Kurama over the ningen version - as a fanfic writer I'd pick ningen Kurama because he has the dark past as well as the softer nature. I'm just glad I can have both without picking one or the other - it's what makes KxH such an interesting pairing.

It's up there with Card Captor Sakura's 'ToyaxYuki/Yue' - with one of the guys having duel personalities. ^_^

Kurama has always looked a bit effeminate, but that wedding dress pic is scary. The first pic of Hiei looks just like him...the others do make him look a bit younger. Those artists are really great! Do many dj artists evolve into original manga artists? CLAMP did.
