work that's been done already....

Post by Deadpool » Sat Jul 13, 2002 12:10 am

I wanted to do this video for months, but I lacked the material to make it. as soon as I'm close to making it, someone else took the idea I had and did his own version of the video. do I still go on and make my version or not???

also, do I make a list of the videos I want to make so that no one else can use my ideas in the future??

If you want to make it, then make it! The whole point of making AMVs is to have fun and express your artistic talent.

Making a list of AMVs you want to do is a good idea, but people may still steal your ideas.

Just make it. If you think you can do a good job and want to see it made your way then make it. Take it from someone who has had six of his ideas made before he got around to it even after he came up with the idea. Ugh...

I agree that you should do it if you want and damn whatever reviews you get. That's what I'm gonna do with one of my vids (though technically it's using different footage to the song).
Claiming is a bad idea though. I think Phade posted somewhere that that was forbidden. That's certainly not practiced, but I see his point. It would prevent other people from doing the things that they want to do. Just keep your ideas to yourself and hope that they're unique enough to be missed by others (and then wonder after a while how they can miss such an obvious music/movie match ^_^). And even if someone else takes it, just shrug it off and do your thing. If you really feel good, look at theirs and leave a review. Good luck! :D

I know the feeling. I was so mad when I saw that someone had entered the same idea I had in the catalogue (mainly because it was a "claimed" idea) but the production notes were also included in the profile with plans as to how the visuals were going to run.

Except for a few obvious scenes, we had two completely different interpretations for the same song/series combo.

So you came up with the combination...it may not neccessarily be the same IDEA as your interpretations could be very different.

Just make it.

Here's my procedure:

1) Before I even contemplate doing an AMV, I do a search on the main site to see how many AMVs have been done to the song I had in mind. If there are simply too many AMVs to that song, I might not do it, regardless of what anime is set to it, unless I think I can make a definitive version or have a really original idea which I think will stand out (for example, my Papercut AMV is the only one on AMVs.org done with Perfect Blue).

2) If I see any which are an exact match, I check to see if they're available for download and, if they have any opinions, what the average score is. If I think I can do better, or if the idea wasn't so original that I'd get accused of ripping it off, I go ahead with it. For example, I gave up on setting Revolutionary Girl Utena to Seel's 'Kiss From a Rose' when I saw how many there were.

3) If the idea is markedly original and I can't tell whether or not I can do better (due to having only a dialup connection I can't actually download other people's AMVs, which puts me at a serious disadvantage) I will probably give up on it. For example, I thought of setting Trigun to Fuel's 'Jesus or a Gun', but I saw there already was one, so I gave up on it.

Just use your discretion, try to be original, and keep any ideas you intend to do closely kept secrets until after you've posted them.

Sometimes a lot of AMVs to one song is a good thing. For instance, I'm obsessed with collecting all the different AMVs made to "Pretty Fly for a White Guy" (and to a lesser extent, "Pretty Fly for a Rabbi"). Why, I don't exactly know.
But that's just me.

As for the topic, yeah. If you wanna make it then make it. It's all about what you wanna do.
