I think prizes are fine. I think competitions are fine. And while I hate being the bearer of bad news; I have to point out that competitions and prizes are one of the main ways society as a whole recognises value in people outside an individuals own field.

For example: To most people Physicist A is "just" a physicist, sure they might be smart and well educated but nobody cares - nobody considers them of any real value. But Physicist B is different story, they won a Noble prize a couple of years ago - nobody remembers what it was for or how it will affect them but they regard them with value. Simply because they won a prize. That is enough for them.

Competition is part of human nature. Reward is part of human nature. In our case we can't receive the usual rewards (money) because it would be illegal to do so. But a prize is OK, so let's take it and receive the recognition with good grace.

You never know, your friends and family might regard your hobby with some value - because you won a prize.

Prizes can be declined by any creator who wins one.

Phade.

Don't get me wrong, I feel it is a nice gesture, I'm just uncomfortable with the fact that they are even there, not really people accepting them

After being quite a regular member of the org forums (which is actually the nexus of the VCA awards a.k.a. pimping grounds for all these amvs ^_~ ) and then taking lengthy periods away...I can say enjoy it all while you have it cause it really doesn't mean a whole lot in the scheme of things.

It's fun...feel good, show off your amvs..maybe get an award or a review. Don't let it bother you if you don't get [either] and when it's all over and you've moved on hopefully you won't look back and realize what an ass you were for throwing a tantrum any time during your stay. That goes for the community as well as making amvs in general.

In other words, no it's not a bad thing at all.

But most of the fun in my Tricky experiment is to see how much of an ass I can make of myself....

I'd probably decline a prize of Windows software, which isn't much use to me - winning at all is the much more valuable prize. That isn't a promise, though - I might also accept Windows software if I thought I could sell it for a high enough price to be worth the bother. Of course it's presumptuous of me to even think about that decision at this point.

On an unrelated point, Arigatomyna's suggestion of "Well, why not eliminate all the reviews and star scale and so on and be just purely a library?" Well, we could eliminate all the scoring without eliminating reviews. Just have them be text with no automatic good/bad/score/average scheme. That would also handily solve the "grade inflation" problem; if you want to write a review that makes the video look good, you have to actually invest effort into writing it. I'm not particularly advocating for such a course of action, I think the system as it stands is not far broken - but it's true that I measure my success pretty much by how many opinions and responses I get, rather than whether they are positive or negative.

But i'd seriously like to know,
Would you guy's be happier without them?

I'm not being sarcastic,
I'm not being an ass.

I'm asking a legit question,
Would you be happier without the viewer's choice award's?

I'd like to see what people think.
No you have a very good point.

Since I know you're fairly new, look on the bright side, they'll be over soon and everything will return to "normal" in a month or two. I hate to say it, but the VCAs just bring out the worst in this community, but as many have already echoed, competition, having pride in one's work and so on are all human nature. It just gets uglier than usual this time of year. Hell we haven't even gotten to the nominees or "real voting" yet. Just wait till that

Just ignore it (if it annoys you) and make videos ;). And don't get me wrong, they can be fun too. It's just a matter of how much you let it get to you. Remember:

Have fun!
