I agree that live action is a terrible idea. Ever seen the live action Guyver? It had Mark Hamill in it lol. Anime doesn't translate into live action at all, that's why anime is so great. You can do things in anime that can't be done with even the modern movie making technology. I hope the entire movie just goes under, I don't want to see one of my favorite anime series be butchered and for people to think that the anime was like that too.

Hehe. I stopped reading these posts after the fifth page. Its amazing how much controversy this supposed film is creating. I'm extremely skeptical that this film will ever see the light of day, and I'm wondering if it has ever been more substantial than an internet rumor. That being said, if this film was made, I would definitely go see it. As an apprentice film maker, I have been thinking just recently how fun it would be to make a high budget nationally released Eva film. It would probably be crap, but in the right hands it could be a masterpiece.

I have been editing NGE for my 2nd AMV this last week (just cutting clips). I have already seen the show twice, and I'm now seeing it for the 3rd time without sound. Its amazing how different the characters seem without sound. Shinji seems more heroic and less whiny, Asuka seems more comedic, Rei's emotions come out much stronger. We see how incredibly caring (motherlike) Misato is. A big reason for this was Anno's reliance on body language. And by body language I don't mean just sweat drops and anger crosses. Asuka crosses her arms, Rei holds her arms behind her back, shinji stares into space, etc. It was during this editing span, (which I will probably finish tommorow) that I noticed Shinji's body language is nearly identical to Haley Joel Osment's. I'm not a big fan of the kid or his movies, but he does have acting ability, I'm confident he could play coming of age shinji as well as the self depreciating shinji. If for some reason he doesnt get cast here, he could nicely fill in for Kaworu, who has similar body language and understatedness (Haley acting gay might hurt my eyes though).

Haley is the only slam dunk cast member. Although the guy who played Jon connor in t3 definitely has the look of shinji. However, hes way to old to play the part and would probably add to the movies cheesyness.

I havent seen any actress who could nail Asuka's role, so I think they should save some money and audition lesser known or new actresses to fill the part. If I HAD to pick an actress, I would say Anna Paquin (Rogue; Xmen), but thats a hell of a stretch.

Rei is even more difficult to play. Rei's alternative personality presented in the original epiode 26 (the valley girl who says "bologna pony") could be played by britney spears (I would laugh if that happened). The problem with that scenario in which rei is like that will likely be left out of the movie. I really can't think of anyone to play the subdued and enigmatic Rei (Especially not BS). Like Asuka, they would have to cast an unknown face for this role, someone who can really fit the part. If I had to pick a name for this role I would say Claire Danes. Shes always had an understated air to her acting style.

Jon Frakes would be a good fit for Gendo, except that Jon Frakes is not a good actor. Or at least, everything he's been in outside of STNG has sucked. But then again, I'm at a serious loss for another actor to put here. Maybe Jon Malcovich with a lot of makeup.

Ah, Fuyutsuki. Someone suggested Christopher Walken here. Now christopher walken is Nothing Like Fuyutsuki, but it would be an interesting cast. Walken plays supporting roles extremely well, and has an undeniable cryptic charm. If he was cast as Fuyutsuki, he would make the original Fuyutsuki very forgettable by comparison. Someone else suggested John Lithgow. Lithgow is a good actor, but hes too cheery for this film.

Misato... hmm. This is a real tough one. Can't be cary ann moss (ew). Misato is caring, irresponsible, and hot. Maybe Bridgette Wilson (Veronica Vahn: Billy Madison). Once again, I'm at a loss for the perfect casting.

Ritsuko: Ok this ones the hardest. .... I give up.

Kaji: Tom Cruise would have been perfect for this guy... ten years ago.
Colin Farrell is the best I can think of.

After this excercise, I think a live action eva movie would be a bad idea, the casting alone is too difficult. Nevermind the fact that a movie like this would pull in 30 million dollars tops, and theres no way they could make it good for less than 80 million or so. It would be the final fantasy movie revisited if it happened.

Although, that doesnt mean it would neccessarily be a bad movie. It could be a great movie that bombs. There have been some rather silly comparisons to the SF and MK movies. Those were fighting games with no real plot or character development. I mean, they are FIGHTING GAMES. Of course the movies were gonna blow (I take my hat of to the first MK though for making it even halfway decent).

NGE is a great series with serious potential for a live action film. However, I still think it would suck because:

A: Some things only work in anime.
B: Hideaki Anno would not be directing it.
C: High likelyhood of cheesy special effects and cheesy costumes.
D: Inability to convert a 10 hour miniseries into 2 hours (see X movie, Escaflowne Movie).

WOW ... :o .... this thread has become HUGE ... i wont even think about reading off from where i left off from ... :| ...

Well i read kearlywi's post and i agree that NGE live action would have a difficult choice when it comes to choosing the actors to play each role. There are many talented actors that are known and some that arent known too well that can play the main characters. But once they manage to find those right actors to play the roles, i think i might just go out and see it, to observe the story line and see how much it differs from the main theme/plot of NGE. Hopefully, it will be enjoyable ... :)

I agree, the problem is, with so many emotion in EVA you want actors you don't already know to act out the characters so you can relate them better, knowing an actor from somewhere else, means that you can compare that actor to other films etc and won't really sink into the charcter in the same way. Personnally I'd sit through the whole thing matching up actors and thinking of them as actors in what they do and how they do it. How ever good they are, it's just not the same...

Hey, How's it goin? I just ran into this post while doing an unrelated search! I don't feel up to reading the 20 pages of posts, but I do want to add an opinion about the live - action version of Evangelions!
I am personally scared aswell that they will butcher it! however The people who created Lord of the Rings is working on this project... So... maybe there's hope!
However... one of the biggest things about Evangelions is that the characters are young, having to deal with the psycological problems of puberty... etc. But I have seen some sketches (as featured in the directors cut version of vol. 7) and it looks like they're going to have a bunch of thirty yr olds... lol, and rei's (which in the sketch they spelled it RAY) hair is black in the sketch... Its supposed to be blueish... LOL
Oh well... I't coming whether we like it or not!

Then you must not have read the press releases and articles or seen the concept sketches.

Sorry for the double post...

If I remember those articles correctly, the plan was not to tell the whole story, but to make a mostly self-contained movie that ended at such a point that a sequel or two would be possible.

Not to mention that they would almost certainly be changing some aspects of the story anyway. Personally, I certainly wouldn't mind bringing the number of Angels back down to the original twelve.

Ok... lol... I ended up reading a bunch of the Thread
I was laughing my ass off on how OT you all got... But I'm pretty bad about it to!
Any whew I had to reply to a thread on page 19 made by LittleKefalos

In the Lord of the rings, the Hobbits were not made to look YOUNG, just Small... MAJOR difference! Just because someone is a little smaller... doesn't mean that look ANY younger!
Beside that I really praise your view points! Optomistic... but real!

Christopher Walken as Gendo... I bow before yee for such a great idea!
Natalie Portman as Asuka... That would be great because she can play a *itch sometimes (she's a good actress) and yet no stress marks... lol and she'd give off that young look
Haley Joel Osment's as Shinji... briliant... just brilliant!

Setting... hmm... maybe a new york meets FinalFantasy XII (Not X-2... I am actually reffering to sketches I've seen for 12) or Gothem city computer generated settings... Maybe... I dunno
But the problem with the FInal Fantasy Movie (Spirits within)... There was an unacceptable imbalance in affects verses emotions... In other words... when they created the film, they were patting themselves on the back for making a 2hr movie completely formed of CG in the intiroty... but they completely forgot the script, story line, and human emotion! when I play the Final Fantasy X-2 and see all the movies!! (even ever since FF VIII really) they do so good with combining CG with human emotion! I cry when I watch some scenes in X-2! Like 1000 words! True Anime goes on a totally different Gravity System (rules and definitions to life) So does X-men... but they did a good job! As long as WetsWorkshop Balances the Emtion/storyline/and CG... NGE I don't think could fail! Ofcoarse... thats ONLY if they balance... If not... I will blow as much as Auska's last line in the "end of Evangelions"
